About the role

We are looking for an experienced and energetic Engineering Manager, with expertise in backend software engineering, people management, and affinity for building and maintaining critical applications. You will be joining our Wholesale Banking Customer & Channels Tribe, responsible for delivery of the primary digital touch-points for global ING Wholesale Banking customers.

The Team:

Within our tribe, you will work on the InsideBusiness Portal, which is ING's digital  anking platform that provides a single point of access to a growing range of wholesale banking products and services around the globe. Accessible anytime and anywhere via web, mobile app and tablet. Inside Business allows wholesale customers such as
multinational corporations or governments to access a range of products and services such as payments, cash management, financial markets, lending and trade finance.
Specifically, you will be a member of the PPAM squad, which plays a central role in the Customer & Channels tribe by managing some of the core services of Inside Business platform. These services together form the party and agreements management system (PAM) of ING Wholesale Banking, providing access to customer data to dozens of applications. The stack is mostly based on Java and Spring Boot for the business
layer, and Oracle, which is our preferred data storage solution. For CI/ CD we use Azure DevOps. The team works in Agile fashion and takes end-to-end responsibility of the full lifecycle of its applications – from requirements engineering all the way up to production releases.


What you'll do
As a Chapter Lead you will work within, and lead the squad for 60% of your time. The remaining 40% you will spend building up expertise in your chapter, developing your chapter members and working with your peers to overcome challenges and collectively do a better job. You will also co-create the area vision and effectively resource the tribe and squads.

You stimulate your chapter members towards continuous improvement of their skills. You speak up and challenge the status quo.

Roles and responsibilities :

  • Creating and safeguarding the professional culture.
  • Put in place a culture of self-development and high-performing teams.
  • Act as a counterpart to the Product Owner and be responsible for the IT deliveries of the squad.
  • Mitigate risk by keeping technical debt in check and by using the latest tech stack of ING.
  • Manage and achieve IT maturity and the squad's mission.
  • Spend approximately half of the time (60%) working as a Senior Software Engineer.
  • Have an up-to-date vision regarding IT expertise and keep abreast of developments inside and outside of ING.
  • Define and ensure the application of standards in your own area of IT expertise.


People management responsibilities:

  • Be responsible for the personal development and evaluation of the chapter members, based on input from the Product Owner, the Agile Coach and individual squad members.
  • Encourage chapter members to develop themselves and facilitate this (e.g. providing training opportunities).
  • Provide coaching with both in terms of professional and personal development. Constantly ensure the development of individual members' expertise.
  • Identify top performers and take action at an early stage for
  • underperformance.
  • Support talent acquisition and retention management activities (e.g. interview applicants)
  • Discuss resource planning for squads and chapters with the IT Area Lead and Product Owners.
  • Be a key member of the Product Owner, Chapter Lead and Agile Coach (POCLAC) sessions, where ways to optimise performance and improvement of capabilities of the squad are discussed.

  • At least 8 years of experience in the Backend ecosystems (Java 8+, Spring Boot)
  • Experience with Docker.
  • Experience with relational databases.
  • You have a good understanding of Software Architecture.
  • Experience and thorough understanding of continuous integration and delivery.
  • You have experience in implementing test strategies.
  • You are able to discuss with your stakeholders and product owner about features and stories and can translate these in
