Data Scientist

Summary: 

The Child Mind Institute (CMI) is seeking a Data Scientist to drive and strengthen analytics efforts, with a focus on translational engineering research in mental health. This is a joint position in the research department at CMI. The Senior Clinical Engineer Scientist will lead the clinical data science team within the Data Assessment, Refinement, and Testing (DART) core, while also contributing to cross-functional projects through regular collaboration with other teams within and beyond CMI. The teams within CMI include the MATTER Lab, the Center for Data Analytics Innovation and Rigor [DAIR], the Multimodal Brain/Body Imaging [MoBI] core, and the  Product team developing digital technologies, among others. Projects and deliverables supported will range from NIH-funded studies to large-scale initiatives (e.g., Next Generation Digital Therapeutics [NGDT] Program, and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Global Center at CMI). 

The candidate reports to the Head of the DART core within the Strategic Data Initiatives (SDI) Center, while the Director of the SDI Center will help prioritize  project involvement  as needed. This is an exempt full-time position in New York, NY, USA.

Responsibilities: 

• Identify opportunities for leveraging data and apply biomedical engineering solutions to address mental health challenges.
• Analyze data, using advanced machine learning and statistical methods, not only for non-clinical studies (e.g., computational models) but also for clinical studies (e.g., randomized trials). 
• Develop and implement pipelines for collecting and/or analyzing multimodal data (e.g., 3D kinematics, EEG, eye-tracking, digitized cognitive tasks), in collaboration with the MoBI core and DAIR. 
• Develop and implement AI-powered data analysis pipelines, in collaboration with the MATTER Lab and DAIR. 
• Optimize software pipelines, data visualization tools, and machine learning algorithms/models, in collaboration with the MoBI core. 
• Support to prototype digital tools and apps, in iterative collaboration with the Product team.
• Mentor junior research scientists and data analysts, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
• Contribute to effective, scalable, well-documented code.
• Write documentation and relevant text for scientific, clinical, or public dissemination of knowledge.

Qualifications: 

• A PhD in biomedical engineering, computer science, or related field.  
• 10+ years of experience with research and data analysis : experience of a leadership role is a plus. 
• Strong proficiency in machine learning and AI technologies.
• Strong understanding of steps involved in clinical translation.
• Intensive experience with processing and analysis of multi-modal data  (e.g., 3D kinematics, EEG, physiological measures, eye-tracking, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and/or ecological assessments). 
• Expertise in building pipelines and products in research-focused settings (i.e., expertise in commercial-focused settings is a plus). 
• Programming experience in a combination of Python (including the scientific Python ecosystem), R, C++, C#, Javascript, Matlab, bash scripting, or equivalent and similarly popularly used libraries.
• Comfortable working in Unix/Linux environments on both personal and high-performance computing infrastructures.
• Strong problem-solving skills.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Highly collaborative.
