General Statement

Position Summary

 The After School Program Assistant is primarily responsible for helping to supervise children and providing homework assistance.

Essential Functions

  1. Assist in the supervision of children in the After School Program.
  2. Assist children with reading and homework completion.
  3. Assist in implementing established daily schedule.
  4. Assist in maintaining a healthy and safe environment for children.
  5. Assist in keeping facilities, materials and equipment utilized by the After School Program clean and in good working order.
  6. Adherence to all Salvation Army Policies and Procedures including Protecting the Mission.
  7. Assist in the completing of reports as needed.
  8. Promote the Ministry and Mission of The Salvation Army.
  9. Perform other duties as requested.

    Working Conditions

    Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, run, jump, and twist on an intermittent and sometimes continuous basis. Maintain  the ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, reach overhead, and carry office supplies. Maintain the  ability to operate a computer, telephone, and similar technologies. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

    Minimum Qualifications

    1. Must be a minimum of 16 years of age.
    2. 1-2 years of experience working with children in a high energy childcare capacity; one or more of the experiences would be applicable for the role: Youth Group Leader, Day Camp/Summer Camp Counselor,.
    3. Capable of meeting the physical and mental demands of the position.
    4. Able to pass a background check and complete The Salvation Army child safety training (Protecting the Mission).

                                                                              Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

    1. Possesses good leadership skills.
    2. Ability enforce defined boundaries and behavior expectations a must.
    3. Possess excellent communication skills – verbal and written.
    4. Ability to solve problems and mediate conflict between children.                                                                                                                                                                      
    5. Flexibility and willingness to be a part of a team.
    6. Ability to set priorities and work independently with minimal supervision.
    7. Ability and willingness to keep information confidential.
    8. Ability to read and interpret documents, rules, instructions, and procedures.
    9. Ability to complete certification in Protecting the Mission policies and procedures.
