Accounting Manager- Healthcare Risk & Non-Claim Benefit Expense Contracts

We are seeking a highly skilled and strategic Accounting Manager to lead complex accounting operations related to healthcare facility and provider contracts, with a focus on Non-Claim Benefit Expenses (NCBE), Medical Loss Ratio (MLR) impacts, self-funded group billings, and provider risk arrangements within our Controllership organization (Enterprise Accounting). This role requires a strong technical accounting foundation, deep understanding of GAAP and healthcare statutory principles, and proven leadership in managing teams and collaborating across departments and executive leadership.
The ideal candidate will bring a blend of analytical rigor, operational excellence, and interpersonal effectiveness to drive governance, accuracy, and efficiency in high-risk accounting areas.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee accounting for facility and provider contracts with unique risk and NCBE structures, ensuring compliance with GAAP and healthcare statutory requirements.
- Establish and maintain governance frameworks for risk and NCBE accounting, ensuring complete, accurate, and timely financial reporting.
- Develop and implement standardized, centralized, and controlled processes for high-risk accounting areas, driving operational efficiency and internal control.
- Plan, organize, and direct the activities of the assigned accounting team, including staffing, development, performance management, and labor relations.
- Serve as a key liaison with internal stakeholders, including actuarial, senior health services, finance, legal, and executive leadership, to ensure alignment and transparency in financial reporting.
- Deliver timely and accurate financial results and insights to internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies and senior leadership.
- Identify and monitor performance metrics that support departmental and organizational strategic goals.
- Provide strategic solutions to complex accounting and business challenges, leveraging data and cross-functional collaboration.
- Continuously improve operational policies and procedures to uphold sound business practices and robust internal controls.
- Lead and support special projects, audits, and initiatives as assigned.
- Champion a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement within the accounting team.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
- CPA, CMA, or CFM certification strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 6–10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
- Demonstrated expertise in GAAP and healthcare statutory accounting principles.
- Experience with healthcare contract accounting, including risk-based arrangements and NCBE.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, including experience with union and non-union environments.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across all levels of the organization.
- Proficiency in financial systems and tools, including Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and ERP platforms.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
