Job Title: Emergency Department Patient Care Tech
Department: Emergency Department
Location: Canton Potsdam Hospital
Hours Per Week: 37.5 (hours can often exceed this)
Schedule: 12 Hour shifts, 6:45 am to 7:15 pm; two weekends of every four weeks posted
SUMMARY:
Provides direct and indirect patient care under the supervision and delegation of a licensed nurse or practitioner, in accordance with established treatment plans. Assists with essential tasks to support the overall organization and efficiency of the Emergency Department. Demonstrates flexibility in responding to patient and departmental needs in a fast-paced environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide direct patient care and support indirect activities to ensure the emergency department runs smoothly
Deliver safe and competent patient care, including ambulation, transfers, and lifting
Take and record vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, and pain level
Document vital signs and EKG results in the electronic medical record (EMR)
Assist with patient admissions, discharges, and transfers within the hospital
Order and rotate stock in the emergency department, ensuring supplies are not overstocked or expired; restock emergency room supplies as needed
Provide CPR during emergency “code” situations
Perform EKGs on emergency department patients as ordered by the practitioner
Perform blood collection procedures using venipuncture
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
American Heart Association Basic Life Support (AHA BLS)
Safe Patient Handling training (can be obtained on the job required within one month of hire
Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
Occasional stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and pushing up to 50 pounds
Close visual acuity, read charts, analyze and prepare data, transcribing, viewing a computer screen, dials, equipment settings, literature and other printed or handwritten materials
OSHA Category I: High risk of exposure to blood/body fluids in the day to day job duties
Regular and on-time attendance
Individual may be required to work non-standard shifts as needed (weekend, evenings, swing shift, or some combination)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma (or equivalent)
Previous CNA experience
EKG certification
Phlebotomy experience preferred
Medical terminology
Associates degree
Excellent customer service
