Job Description Summary

The Public Safety Dispatcher performs technical communications work in support of public safety operations. Work involves receiving emergency and non-emergency calls, monitoring alarms and CCTV systems, obtaining and relaying information, and dispatching appropriate personnel. Position is responsible for maintaining communication logs and databases and operating a host of complex telecommunications and computer equipment to include multi-line phone systems, Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system,, and two-way radios. These positions require the ability to multi-task and to remain calm and composed in high stress situations. Positions maintain confidentiality and discretion, works individually or with others and adapts to change and circumstances. The employee in this position is considered an essential employee and may be required to work non-traditional hours (evenings/overnight), weekends, holiday, during severe weather events, and overtime hours.

As a condition of continued employment, the Public Safety Dispatcher must be able to successfully complete and maintain the APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification within the first six (6) months of their initial hire date as a Public Safety Dispatcher.

The Public Safety Dispatcher must be able to successfully complete the Public Safety Dispatch Academy when scheduled to attend, usually within the first six months of their initial hire date as a Public Safety Dispatcher.

Minimum Education:

  • High school Diploma or equivalent required.

Minimum Experience/Training

  • Three or more years of documented customer service, administrative, police dispatch or call center experience.

  • Experience monitoring alarm and camera systems and using computerized dispatch and records systems preferred.

  • Current CPR with AED certification preferred.

  • IS-100, IS-700, IS-800.d, IS-907 certification is preferred.

Essential Functions:

  • Daily - 30%: Determines the nature and importance of all telephone call requests, and initiates appropriate personnel.

  • Daily - 20%: Inputs and retrieves information from different Public Safety databases, monitors all internal office telephones, two-way radio communications, alarm and access control systems, and maintains a detailed dispatch CAD system.

  • Daily - 10%: Maintains the data of the Public Safety computerized dispatch and records systems.

  • Daily - 20%: Effectively communicates with students, faculty, employees, emergency personnel, etc. When gathering information related to an incident, the Public Safety Dispatcher is required to ask probing questions to obtain relevant information to include: who, what, when, where, and why.

  • Daily - 10%: Interprets a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Daily - 5%: Monitors CCTV videos.

  • Other - 5%: Performs related functions as assigned.
