Manager- State and Local Taxation

Main Objective:
Performs general accounting duties in conjunction with G/L Manager. Manages staff in the areas of (1) sales and use tax (2) informational reporting (3) property tax and (4) excise tax.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Review sales & use tax returns and supporting documentation to ensure accurate and timely tax compliance.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams on indirect tax issues (Sales, Customer Care, Accounts Payable, Credit & Collections, Procurement, IT)
- Manage all indirect tax audits, inquiries, and data gathering.
- Complete annual sales/revenue break down by state, including reconciliation to tax filings, for income tax apportionment.
- Oversee the informational reporting life-cycle, including (1) collecting vendor W-9s for domestic and W-8BEN for non-US vendors and consultants (2) validating tax identification information through periodic TIN matching with the IRS (3) reviewing backup withholding requirements for domestic and foreign vendors, (4) supervising data mining and aggregation of annual spend activity to compile IRS reporting for 1099, 1042-S, 1042, etc. and (5) annual tax return compliance.
- Manage the preparation of tangible personal property tax filings and unclaimed property reporting for US based legal entities, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
- Maintain state certificates of authority, oversee annual report preparation, and local level license renewals.
- Support M&A diligence specific to sales and use tax and property tax.
- Ensure timely Vertex software monthly updates and supervise all Vertex sales and use tax engine changes (including, but not limited to pre-calculation tax assist rules, exemption certificate management, tax drivers, tax categories, users and role assignments, tax goods movement solutions, and upgrades to the software system).
- Keep current on new tax developments and legislative changes that could affect any indirect tax collection, procedures, and/or reporting.
- Perform any other projects, tasks, or ad hoc reporting as assigned.

Education and Experience:
- 4+ year degree in Accounting/Business or related field required.
- 6+ years of indirect tax experience with progressively increasing responsibilities and accountability; medical device industry a plus.
- 2+ years managing a team of indirect tax professionals.
- Certified public accountant (CPA)
- Experience working with Vertex tax software and SAP ERP system highly preferred.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills required.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements/Specialized Courses and/or Training:
Knowledge of financial regulations, policies, practices and principles. Ability to effectively coordinate activities with other departments. Ability to maintain positive relationship with firm’s CPA. Understanding of State and Local taxation regarding sales and use tax. Knowledge of IRS requirements regarding domestic and foreign backup withholding and reporting.
