Part-Time Lecturer, Law Practice Management, Spring 2025

Chapman University's Fowler School of Law seeks applications for a Part-Time Lecturer of Law Practice Management for Spring and/or Fall 2025. The successful candidate will teach one 3-unit section of the course. Ideally, we are seeking a candidate who can start in January 2025 for the spring semester; however, we will also consider applicants who are unable to start until the Fall semester. The course is scheduled for Spring term on Tuesdays from 8:45 am - 11:30 am. Scheduling for the Fall will be subject to the instructor's availability and preference.

The Dale E. Fowler School of Law offers a JD, as well as a JD/MBA with Argyros College of Business and Economics and a JD/MFA with the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. The law school currently has 450 JD law students who attend classes in modern 100,000 sq ft state-of-the-art Kennedy Hall.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities for this role include teaching one section of Law Practice Management.

Course description: According to the California State Bar, one-third of all practicing attorneys in the state work as solo practitioners or in small firms (three or fewer attorneys). Success as a solo or in a small firm requires more than just knowing the law; it requires understanding how to run a business. This course will provide students with a practical survey of topics relevant to the attorney-entrepreneur. Students will learn the fundamentals of starting a law practice; growing it from startup to thriving business; and managing the legal, business, and human resources issues that will inevitably present along the way. Upon conclusion of the course, students will be well-positioned to open their own practice post-graduation or add value to an existing small firm.

Qualifications

Required:

Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an ABA Acredited law school and a successful background in solo or small firm practice as an attorney-entrepreneur.

Successful completion of a background check is required for the final candidate. The pay for course and courses-related work for this position is $50.04 per hour. Position is subject to final budget approval.
