JOB SUMMARY

This position is located within the City of Oklahoma City in the Criminal Justice Division of the Office of the Municipal Counselor and reports to the Criminal Justice Division Head.  This position will require the applicant to be licensed to practice law in the State of Oklahoma or a third-year law student who has graduated from an accredited law school in May 2025 and successfully passes the Oklahoma Bar Exam in July 2025.  Assistant Municipal Counselor is a position in the Municipal Counselor’s Office, which provides legal service and guidance to the City, its officers, and departments to ensure that all City operations are performed in a manner consistent with the requirements of federal, state and City laws and ordinances.  Essential job functions include: responsible for acquiring knowledge of City ordinances and interpreting their effect on municipal operations; prosecuting violations of ordinances in the municipal criminal court; prosecuting cases in  jury division, traffic and other dockets; reviewing charges for filing decisions; reviewing files for plea recommendations; appearing before the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals;  performing legal research and writing briefs; possible representation of the City in various capacities which may include preparing and presenting civil cases in District Court; preparing legal opinions and ordinances; appearing before administrative boards, commissions and public trusts; performing administrative functions required in a law office. Research conducted and recommendations made are periodically reviewed by the Criminal Justice Division Head for thoroughness and adherence to governing laws, ordinances, and departmental policy and procedures. Experience in criminal law is required. Experience in municipal law is desirable but not essential. The Assistant Municipal Counselor serves at the pleasure of the Municipal Counselor and may be assigned to another division based on the needs of the office.

Honorably discharged veterans of the United States Active Duty Armed Forces, National Guard, and Reserve Forces who are not currently employed full-time by the City of Oklahoma City and who meet the qualifications for the position shall be given preference. To receive preference, veterans must submit verification of honorable discharge from the United States military service (Department of Defense Form DD214 or NGB Form 22) prior to the closing date of the vacancy announcement. 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduation from an accredited law school.
  • Admitted to practice law in the State of Oklahoma, or a 2025 graduate that will take the Oklahoma Bar in July 2025. Regarding 2025 graduates, an offer of employment will be contingent upon successfully passing the Oklahoma Bar Examination.
