SUMMARY
Under general supervision, assist the Emergency Management, Safety and Security Department with research, development, and coordination of violence prevention and security services; provide guidance, consultation, and training to create and maintain a safe environment in MPS schools for students, staff, and the community; manage assigned programs in compliance with Federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Provides a bridge between school-based intervention and any outside law enforcement as needed.

• Supports the efforts of the Site Emergency Team and site threat assessment team.

• Responds to security incidents and emergencies; evaluates options, coordinates resources, and documents and evaluates response activities, and manages incident debriefing.
• Supports investigations and produces written reports/referrals regarding school incidents when appropriate.

• Renders basic first aid. • Deescalates volatile situations including fights and confrontations.

• Fosters a trusting, nurturing, and learning environment in the schools in general and with specific engagement strategies.

• Maintains a log of daily activities.
• Develops and presents safety and security training sessions for MPS staff. Conducts security assessment of MPS schools and buildings.
• Attends and monitors security at district events when required.
• Provides advice and consultation to MPS staff on emergency preparedness and EMSS issues; evaluates and prioritizes requests for additional safety and security resources and training.
• Assists in managing operational strategies to prevent and mitigate safety and security threats to MPS.
• Develops and presents training to prevent violence and manage safety and security threats, and other Emergency Management, Safety & Security (EMSS) training programs.
• Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment
• Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
• Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records, and MPS information.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines

Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency Management, Youth Work/Development, or related fields; AND three (3) years of experience in security/violence prevention education OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as determined by Human Resources.
 

Knowledge of:
• Federal, State, and local laws, codes, rules, and regulations governing emergency management, including the City of Minneapolis Office of Emergency Preparedness, Minnesota Department of Public Safety, and Minnesota Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
