KIPP KC opened its first school, KIPP Endeavor Academy, in 2007 with approximately 31 fifth grade students. Today, KIPP Kansas City has grown to serve students in Pre-Kindergarten through 11th grade and is currently educating approximately 850 students.

Purpose statement

The job of Social Emotional Specialist (K-8) provides a continuum of services to students with exceptional behavioral needs as identified on their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). 

Job Description

The mission of the Social Emotional Educator is to implement positive behavioral change in students by building relationships with students and families. The SES will do this by maintaining a calm, positive environment for students to reflect on their behaviors when they are removed from class and practice essential skills to improve participation in class. 

Essential Functions

• Serves as a member of the IEP team to develop instructional goals and objectives and identify other services for the student.
• Develops lesson plans to instruct students and fulfill social/emotional curriculum and/or individual educational plan (IEP) goals.
• Communicates with colleagues, students, and families on a regular basis.

• Provides a safe learning environment for students on an IEP when they can no longer participate in their general education classroom.
• Maintains accurate, complete and correct student data as required by laws, district policies and administrative regulations.

Qualifications

Required Skills

• Be able to meet the physical demands of some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling if needed to execute CPI procedures. 
• Ensure that all students removed from class are in a safe, non-disruptive environment monitored by an adult within 5 minutes of the student being removed
• Create and maintain a calm, positive environment
• Execute a system of reflection for students who are removed from class
• Execute a tracking system for students who are removed from class
• Collaborate to ensure school behavior systems are functioning at a high level
• Use verbal and nonverbal skills to help students de-escalate when they are disrupting the school learning environment
• Execute effective CPI 
• Model appropriate behaviors, emotions, and communication skills, e.g., anger management, conflict resolution, and problem solving

Preferred Certification

• Registered Behavior Technician
