General Description of the Job Class

The Infectious Diseases/Antimicrobial Stewardship Clinical Pharmacist Coordinator is a resource dedicated to enhancing the quality of medication use through antimicrobial stewardship.  This individual works collaboratively with clinical pharmacists, medical staff, and other healthcare workers under the direction of the Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator Supervisor and the Antibiotic Stewardship Medical Director.

The Pharmacy Coordinator focus time on administrative activities pursuant to specialty projects, process improvement, and/or other departmental goals and initiatives. Ensures compliance where applicable for accreditation standards. Additionally assists with onboarding of staff with ASP initiatives and staff education. The coordinator does not have any direct reports.

 

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

  • Perform prospective and retrospective antimicrobial review, feedback, and (when indicated) intervention throughout Duke Raleigh Hospital

  • Participate in the development of infectious diseases-related protocols and order sets

  • Update DUH-Raleigh infectious disease guidelines to improve antibiotic decision-support for DUH-Raleigh clinicians relating to the selection, dose, duration, and monitoring of antimicrobials

  • Collaborate with other members of the antibiotic stewardship interdisciplinary team to establish models and procedures to audit and provide prescriber feedback in order to optimize antimicrobial prescribing practices

  • Represent antibiotic stewardship to front-line prescribers and administrative leaders at DUH-Raleigh; actively contribute, and provide leadership in related committees, groups or initiatives relating to antimicrobial stewardship

  • Co-Chair DUH Raleigh Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee

  • Participate in the preparation of reports intended to document the impact of the program on quality, safety, and cost of antimicrobial use

  • Work to ensure optimal compliance with anti-infective related clinical pathways and guidelines (e.g. hospital-acquired pneumonia, CMS guidelines for surgical infection prevention)

  • Analyze prescribing and utilization patterns utilizing internal and external databases (i.e. CDC NHSN AUR module, UHC Clinical Resource Manager, Medicare process of care measures) to identify trends and improvement opportunities.

  • Design and implement strategies and activities for enhancing performance in antimicrobial medication utilization

  • Participate in the review of requests for restricted antibiotic use

  • Assist in developing annual quality and financial goals for anti-infective utilization

  • Participate in the conduct of didactic and experiential training of present and future physicians and pharmacists in principles of antimicrobial stewardship

  • Provide educational lectures and/or participates in research (Duke, State/Local, National)

 

 

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

  • Doctor of Pharmacy Degree OR BS Pharmacy Degree

 

Experience

 

  • Two years of pharmacy practice experience 

  • Managerial/supervisor
