Principal Consultant, Geotechnical Engineer (Principal Level)

ERM is seeking a Principal Geotechnical Engineer with experience in Civil or Geotechnical design to work with our engineering design team led out of Charleston, West Virginia. In this role, you will provide strong you will provide design team leadership and project support for civil, stormwater, water management, geotechnical and/or similar related projects based on background and interest. These services are provided for clients locally, nationally and globally. This position provides opportunity for the successful candidate to participate in challenging projects across multiple industry sectors including the electric power (solar, wind and fossil fuel) industry, natural gas providers, regional and global manufacturing, chemical industry among others.
As a Lead Project Engineer, you will contribute your leadership, client relationship, and technical consulting skills to support the growth of ERM’s business and client base while networking with ERM's global engineering technical team and technology experts to share best practices across the industry. Key Skills/Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil, Geotechnical, or related engineering field.
- Has passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam or is licensed as a Professional Engineer.
- At least 6 to 8 years of progressively more complex design experience, including consulting for private-sector clients. Consideration will also be made for candidates with strong field experience including construction inspection/oversight in earlier parts of their career.
- Competency in AutoCAD Civil 3D including grading, profiles, and integrating survey data while working closely with our AutoCAD Designers. Candidate should have at least 2 years of prior experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D for these purposes.
- Well experienced preparing technical specifications and drawing sets.
- Strong working knowledge of MS Office Suite software.
- Demonstrated ability to research and prepare concise, understandable and accurate technical documents.
- Keen attention to detail particularly in regard to performing quality assurance and quality control reviews of junior staff deliverables.
- Ability to work both independently and as a collaborative member of a project team.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills, which includes being comfortable and effective at communicating complex technical knowledge and concepts to other staff, clients, regulatory agencies, and project stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Ability to efficiently work from a remote location and provide dependable communication of schedule, work products and tasks for yourself and the teams you will work with.
- This position will focus on civil design and environmental support projects for our clients which include a mixture of application and practice of site civil, stormwater management and geotechnical engineering design and associated permitting and permit compliance.
- Work collaboratively with ERM teams, Principal Consultants and Partners to provide industry-leading service to a portfolio of clients.
- The successful candidate will support the Project Manager and other team members including engaging in project meetings, delegating, mentoring and overseeing the work of more junior staff, and be responsible for high quality work and deliverables.
- Engaged in multiple projects concurrently. Projects are often fast-paced, multi-faceted, and geographically diverse.
- Manage tasks for projects, either single or multi-site, on time and to budget including elements such as scope and delivery requirements, budgeting and coordinating field work.
- Managing health, safety, and risk aspects of a project in compliance with ERM’s world class Health and Safety Program.
- On a project specific basis, act as a Client point of contact, and lead the engineering/permitting team approach and delivery to the Client.
- Generate well organized and written technical reports and assist in the development of proposals.
- Maintain client relationships to support repeat business.
- Engage with key regulatory agencies, including local and state officials for permitting.
