Job Description

AECOM is seeking a Mid-level Geotechnical Engineer to be located in New Orleans, LA.

Field or Project Locations: Louisiana and Texas

Job Summary:

AECOM Surface Water is seeking a Mid-Level Geotechnical Engineer with 4 years of experience. As a candidate, you will have the chance to showcase your expertise in geotechnical design, analyses, and engineering judgment for each project task. We value a positive, professional, and client-focused approach to project tasks, and we expect you to strive for complete designs supported by accurate analyses based on sound geotechnical principles. In this role, strong leadership skills are essential as you will assist project managers and lead junior staff to achieve project objectives.

Flexibility is a key aspect of this position, as candidates should be prepared to travel a minimum of 25% to support other offices and/or AECOM construction sites as needed. We expect candidates to demonstrate a strong technical knowledge of soil and rock mechanics, geotechnical design, and the ability to effectively manage their own time and budget. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse, multi-disciplinary team spread across the USA, and in some cases, the world.

The candidate, under limited supervision, will do the following but not limited to:

  • Participate in field assignments that will include soil and rock borings, test pits, CPT soundings, geophysical testing; geotechnical instrumentation design and construction; and inspection of the construction of geotechnical features like retaining walls, foundations, dams, levees, floodwalls, and tunnels.
  • Have the opportunity to travel and work in locations within the state of Louisiana and Texas (potentially other states within the USA and around the world).
  • Mentor and train junior geotechnical engineers.
  • Design shallow and deep foundations, earth retaining structures, ground improvement, flood risk reduction structures, embankments and cut slopes, and both soft and hard rock tunnels.
  • Develop geotechnical design parameters based on laboratory data results.
  • Prepare and review Geotechnical Reports, Alternative Analysis Reports, etc.
  • Use computer programs including GeoStudio, UTexas4, LPILE, GROUP, SHAFT, Plaxis, FLAC, Settle3D, and MathCAD for geotechnical analyses.
  • Review design plans and specifications and for compliance with geotechnical recommendations and communicate with multiple disciplines and provide design improvement recommendations.
  • Have the opportunity to meet with clients and participate in proposals.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • BA/BS + 4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • Valid US driver's license required. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, or in progress
  • Professional Engineering (PE) License  as well as the ability to obtain PE license in 6 months in both Louisiana and Texas
  • Prior experience = 5 years of practical applied knowledge in the industry
  • Proficient in GeoStudio, APILE, LPILE, GROUP, SHAFT, Settle3D, and MathCAD software
  • Preferred experience in numerical modeling using Plaxis and/or FLAC software
  • Strong technical progression within advanced topics in geotechnical engineering
  • The ideal candidate should possess experience and the ability to make informed
