We are seeking an experienced Engineering Lab Supervisor to lead our team through a transformative phase from legacy mobile robotics to an innovative digital platform. This role requires hands-on leadership, serving as both participant and mentor. Prioritizing lab work for resource efficiency and timely project delivery will be paramount. You'll set high test standards, pioneer new processes, and optimize lab efficiency, working closely with product teams to enhance design for manufacturability, service, and cost-effectiveness. Your expertise will drive our evolution toward an advanced digital platform, ensuring quality, efficiency, and innovation in every aspect of our lab operations.
What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)
While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:
1. Leadership and Operational Management:
- Lead by example, actively engaging in lab activities as a player-coach
- Prioritize incoming projects and tasks, optimizing lab productivity and ensuring schedule adherence
- Oversee and mentor a team of electronic and mechanical technicians, providing guidance and technical expertise to foster skill development and implement best practices
2. Project Management and Collaboration:
- Collaborate with NPD project leaders, managers, and stakeholders to comprehend testing requirements and project timelines
- Participate in design reviews and work with design engineers to establish practices for quality, manufacturable, and cost-effective designs
- Oversee proof of concept and alpha builds, revising release documentation and contributing to process and technology development for product qualification and redesigns
3. Process Improvement and Compliance:
- Develop and implement standardized test procedures and best practices covering electronics, firmware/software, and mechanical aspects
- Set and maintain high-quality standards, ensuring compliance with industry regulations, and enhance lab testing quality
4. Efficiency Enhancement and Training:
- Continuously enhance lab processes and workflows to improve efficiency and accuracy
- Develop training programs to upskill lab technicians, ensuring a competent workforce and driving continuous improvement initiatives
5. Documentation, Equipment Maintenance, and Industry Awareness:
- Ensure comprehensive documentation of lab activities and accurate data recording
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support quality and manufacturing initiatives
- Monitor and maintain lab equipment, ensuring proper maintenance and calibration
- Stay updated on industry trends and technological advancements to drive continuous improvement and innovation
- Participate in other projects as assigned that relate to the overall goals of the department or organization
What we are looking for (Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education)
We each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:
Required Experience
- Proven experience as an Engineering Lab Supervisor or similar role
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- At least five years as an electronics technician in this industry or 10 years in a related field
- Hands-on experience in electronic systems testing and troubleshooting
- Demonstrated leadership and team management skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities
- Strong problem-solving skills and keen attention to detail
- Ability to set priorities, delegate tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Proficient in using lab equipment and software
- Experience in setting test standards and developing new processes
- Familiarity with industry regulations and compliance requirements
- Ability to use or learn Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence), project management software, Microsoft Teams, and Office
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or related field; or equivalent experience
Travel & Working Environment
- Core hours: 8AM - 5PM
- Onsite
