Occupational Summary

Responsibility for developing and implementing multimedia communication strategies to support School of Medicine (SOM)’s key priorities and core values. Establishes standards and provides oversight of photo and multimedia content for websites, publications, fundraising campaign materials and other internal and external communication channels. Reports to Assistant Dean for Digital and Brand Communications.

Work Performed

 

Creative Direction

Direct the creativity and production of photography, videography, and other multimedia content (to include animation, podcasts, etc.) to enhance strategic communications initiatives, illustrate news and feature stories, enhance storytelling, support content marketing strategies, promote educational and training programs, support alumni and donor relations, and highlight philanthropic initiatives.

Coordinate with University Communications and Marketing and DUHS Marketing Communications video/multimedia teams on strategic projects. Coordinate with University Alumni Engagement and Development teams on multimedia projects to support fundraising campaigns.

Provide guidance on use of videography and multimedia assets to School of Medicine Communicators Network. Stay abreast of video and multimedia trends, including video best practices on social media. Attend trainings/learn new software, techniques. Participate in Duke video/multimedia working groups.

 

Management

In coordination with Assistant Dean for Digital and Brand Communications, hire and manage multimedia vendors, which may include videographers, photographers, animators.  Serve as a creative director for the work of such vendors.

Manage 1 FTE, the Office of Strategic Communications’ multimedia producer.

Manage School of Medicine’s digital asset management system, manage input of assets, add metadata to assets, provide training to system administrators and users. Maintain extensive and current library of quality photographic images representing all aspects of School of Medicine.

 

Photography and Videography

Capture still photography and video of Duke University School of Medicine campus and people, including still photos and b-roll of buildings, architecture, landscapes, faculty, staff, students, trainees, seasonal images, and to highlight missions of School of Medicine.

Capture photography and video for key School of Medicine editorial publications, including Magnify, DukeMed Alumni News, and general SOM Newsroom content.

Identify and pitch story ideas, create original video content.

Create compelling videos to support School of Medicine priority initiatives.

Coordinate photo and video shoots with department/unit communicators and relevant faculty and staff, as needed.

Capture photography and video at School of Medicine and Duke Health events, such as graduation or white coat ceremonies.

Capture photography and video at key where EVP for Health Affairs and Dean of School of Medicine is participating and/or speaking.

Travel as needed for local video and photo shoots.

 

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications, marketing, strategic planning, analytical and organizational skills generally required through completion of Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, communications, English, Visual Arts, or a related field.

Experience

Requires four years of experience in journalism, photojournalism, public relations, marketing or related field with extensive experience working as a photographer and videographer. Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills necessary to manage and coordinate a variety of tasks.
