CAIRO DIAGNOSTICS LABORATORY, a national reference laboratory is seeking an experienced and highly collaborative Senior Hematopathologist to provide diagnostic expertise in hematopathology and related ancillary testing. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality diagnostic services, supporting laboratory growth and innovation, and contributing to clinical, operational, and strategic initiatives within a high-volume reference laboratory environment.

This position requires 5-10 years of expertise in the interpretation of bone marrow, lymph node, peripheral blood, and tissue specimens, as well as integration of flow cytometry, molecular diagnostics, cytogenetics/FISH, and immunohistochemistry findings into comprehensive diagnostic reports.

What you'll do:

Diagnostic Responsibilities

  • Interpret and sign out complex hematopathology cases, including:
    • Bone marrow aspirates and biopsies
    • Peripheral blood smears
    • Lymph node and extranodal tissue biopsies
    • Leukemia and lymphoma specimens
  • Integrate morphologic findings with:
    • Flow cytometry
    • Immunohistochemistry
    • Cytogenetics/FISH
    • Molecular pathology and NGS data
  • Provide accurate, timely, and clinically meaningful diagnostic reports.
  • Participate in difficult case consensus conferences and quality review activities.
  • Maintain subspecialty expertise in hematologic malignancies and evolving diagnostic classifications.

Leadership and Medical Oversight

  • Serve as a senior medical resource for laboratory staff, clinicians, and clients.
  • Mentor junior hematopathologists, fellows, and laboratory personnel.
  • Assist in development and standardization of diagnostic protocols and reporting practices.
  • Support medical decision-making regarding test utilization and reflex testing algorithms.
  • Participate in recruitment, onboarding, and physician development initiatives.

Quality and Regulatory Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory and accreditation standards, including:
    • CAP
    • CLIA
    • State regulatory agencies
  • Participate in quality assurance, quality improvement, and proficiency testing programs.
  • Assist with inspection readiness and accreditation activities.
  • Support development and validation of new assays and diagnostic workflows.

Client and Clinical Collaboration

  • Communicate effectively with referring physicians regarding diagnostic findings and consultation cases.
  • Participate in client education initiatives, tumor boards, and case discussions.
  • Support business development efforts through physician engagement and clinical expertise.
  • Collaborate with laboratory operations, sales, and executive leadership to support organizational growth.

Research, Innovation, and Strategic Development

  • Contribute to implementation of advanced hematopathology technologies and testing platforms.
  • Participate in clinical research, publications, presentations, and scientific meetings as appropriate.
  • Help evaluate emerging biomarkers, molecular assays, and diagnostic methodologies.
  • Support strategic expansion of national hematopathology service offerings.


 

What you'll need:

  • Board certification in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology.
  • Fellowship training in Hematopathology with board certification
  • Minimum 5–10 years of post-fellowship hematopathology experience preferred.
  • Experience in a reference laboratory, academic center, or high-volume specialty laboratory strongly preferred.
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in applicable states.
  • Expertise in lymphoma and leukemia diagnostics. (preferred)
  • Experience with:
    • Flow cytometry interpretation
    • Molecular hematopathology
    • Cytogenetics/FISH
    • NGS-based assays
  • Prior leadership or medical directorship experience preferred.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
