Position Overview:  

Brunswick’s BI-DesignLab (BIDL), a member of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Research Park is seeking a Controls & Dynamics intern. 

Brunswick’s autonomy and advanced driver assistance programs aim to make boating more accessible and improve the on-water experience for our customers. It is critical to provide boaters with features that inspire confidence and ensure reliable perform in a variety of conditions.   

In this role, you will help research and model marine vessel dynamics and help grow our simulation tools while also develop and deploy control algorithms for autonomous maneuvering of marine vessels.

Essential Functions: 

Due to the nature of the Lab, it is difficult to capture all the responsibilities and projects accurately. The following list is not exhaustive but alludes to the kinds of workflow that will be expected.   

  • Create and/or integrate modular, dynamic models of a vessel and its components. 

  • Utilize experimental data and other resources to validate models. 

  • Integrate dynamics models with existing simulation tools.  

  • Research and implement control algorithms. 

  • Collaborate with engineers and designers to create a user interface that can help new boaters execute difficult maneuvers.  

  • Interface with sensor and actuator hardware on a test platforms to validate algorithm performance.  

  • Write and maintain relevant documentation.  

Diversity of thought and experiences is fundamental when imagining the unimaginable. Certain skillsets/experiences are necessary; however, others can be developed along the way.  

Required Qualifications:    

  • To be considered for the internship, candidates must have permanent US Work authorization. We are unable to sponsor temporary work visas or accept CPT/OPT authorization for this role. 

  • Current enrollment in MS or PhD program in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Electrical Engineering at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. 

   

Preferred Qualifications:   

  • Interest and experience in robotics path planning and model-predictive control.  

  • Interest and experience in dynamic systems modeling and system identification 

  • Experience with utilizing ML models to develop system dynamics from experimental data. 

  • Experience with ROS2 and C++/Python. 

Working Conditions:  

There may be opportunities to travel for testing guidance and control strategies at a remote facility. Although travel is encouraged if your schedule allows, travel is never mandat
