Job Purpose
The Project Design Engineer is responsible for designing, engineering, and costing critical power construction projects. The Project Design Engineer drives supervision, accuracy, tools and processes within the Services Organization relative to the design and estimating functions of the team and seeks continuous improvement of tools, templates and software used for providing proper estimations and design documentation.
The Project Design Engineer is responsible for the execution of designs for strategic, large, technically complex projects. On such projects, the Project Design Engineer clarifies project scope with clients, oversees discussions with professional engineering and architectural resources, engages special technical resources as necessary, works with equipment vendors to ensure compliance to specifications, performs system reliability calculations, engineers control and monitoring systems, guides the sales and estimating team in the costing and pricing offers, assists the sales team with the presentation of solutions to clients, and supports the Sales and Operations teams in managing internal and external client relationships.
During construction, the Project Design Engineer assists the Project Managers and installation teams to meet the customer schedule and budget while ensuring safety and quality standards are met. The Project Design Engineer is the lead consultant for technical issues related to the design, construction, and performance of the provided solutions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Quote and execute successful field projects within critical facilities environment including oversight and direction of design and estimation deliverables from team members.
- Work with Manager, PMO to establish, track and update team KPI’s.
- As the subject matter expert of critical facility infrastructure, coach team members, such as estimators, project managers, and sales, in technical matters.
- Develop and refine tools and processes to improve team efficiency and accuracy.
- Work closely with internal/external customers to determine requirements and make cost-effective and innovative recommendations.
- Generate, read, interpret, and explain RFQ’s, SOW’s, drawings (Space & Single-Line) to guide the creation of solutions, estimates, and other documents within a timely manner, while adhering to company guidelines (e.g. legal review process and required margin calculations).
- Working knowledge of client-specific standards as well as industry standards, such as Telcordia, within the DC/Critical Facilities environment.
- Support the Sales team in the identification and qualification of new market opportunities.
- Communicate effectively with customers, technicians, and project coordinators to successfully execute projects.
- Create overall strategies and plans to execute projects.
- Manage change control and implement approved changes.
- Assist in the delivery of complete and accurate close-out documentation to clients in a timely manner.
- Prepare and review with team any post-mortems required.
