Position Summary:


We are seeking a dynamic and experienced physician to serve as the Physician Director for Government Relations. In this new and pivotal leadership role, the Physician Director will work with the Vice President for Government Relations at Boston Children’s Hospital to represent the voice of physicians and assess the clinical and patient care implications of State and Federal activities that impact care delivery across the BCH enterprise. This role will also partner with the VP of GR and the GR team to develop policy and advocacy plans that support BCH’s strategic initiatives across its missions.


Key Responsibilities:


Provide physician leadership in engaging with Government

  • Garner support across strategic priorities, such as the BCH Fetal Care and Surgery Center.
  • Support advocacy for community pediatrics in Massachusetts in collaboration with academic and community networks (e.g., Tufts Medicine); Mental Health parity; and response to Administration priorities.
  • Collaborate closely with leaders and subject matter experts, especially the CEO and executive team of the Pediatric Physicians’ Organization at BCH (PPOC), the Medical Director of Accountable Care and Clinical Integration, and the Senior Director, Physician Relations and Outreach at BCH.

Enhance physician policy input and thought leadership

  • Translate clinical and patient care concepts into accessible policy ideas.
  • Provide academic leadership for BCH policy presentations.
  • Engage with government agencies (e.g., DPH, HPC) to advocate for pediatric policy and regulatory support.

Develop a physician-advocacy policy agenda

  • Survey and prioritize policy issues impacting BCH clinicians.
  • Convene multispecialty committees as needed.
  • Educate physicians on Hospital policy priorities.
  • Communicate physicians’ concerns to Hospital and Department leadership.
  • Engage with societies and organizations to advance aligned priorities (e.g., MMS, MHA, CHA, AAP).

Develop central educational programming in partnership with Government Relations

  • Collaborate with Departments to integrate subspecialty topics.
  • Help design/refine curriculum for resident/fellow training.
  • Explore CME, CNE, and funding options.
  • Vet, support, and supervise electives.
  • Advise medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty interested in policy and government relations.
  • Facilitate advocacy opportunities for clinicians and support skill development (e.g., testimony, legislative meetings).

Create a framework for an institutional healthcare policy research portfolio

  • Support and audit healthcare policy researchers at BCH.
  • Collaborate with policy groups (e.g., Fenwick Institute).
  • Work with population health experts to disseminate BCH research for regulatory education and response.
  • Examples: referral trends, capacity, cost, pediatric delivery needs, outcomes.
  • Promote alignment across recommendations developed through research.

Required Qualifications:

  • MD or equivalent; board certification in Pediatrics or related specialty.
  • Significant senior medical leadership experience, including clinical operations or system management.
  • Expertise in pediatric care with experience in government relations and policy across institutions or healthcare networks.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare policy, regulatory requirements, and agency engagement (e.g., DPH, HPC).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to build relationships with physicians, leadership, external partners, and government bodies.
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving ability to advance both clinical and operational goals.
