About the role

Description

Lakes Gas Co. Assistant Managers are expected to carry through on the direct requests from the Regional Manager and Home Office. Person needs to have a Class B CDL with Tanker, Airbrakes, and Hazardous Materials endorsements. If the prospective manager does not have endorsements, they must actively be scheduled to train and test to meet job duty requirements. Person needs to possess a current DOT medical certificate card. Person needs to have strong time management skills, display attention to detail, have the ability to prioritize tasks, and give proper directions to staff. Must look for and communicate to Regional Manager opportunities for improvement. Must ensure employee work is completed in a safe and timely manner. Primary responsibilities include excellent customer service, sales and conflict resolution skills.  

In the absence of or per the direction of the Regional Manager ability to lead, organize and supervise the support staff. Responsible for Human Resources functions at the branch level: incident reporting, recruiting, interviewing, hiring, employee training and development, conflict resolution, coaching, counseling, and involvement with termination of employment. Responsible for processing accurate timecards, routing deliveries, maintenance and inspection of company and customer properties and equipment. Must adhere to all Local, State and Federal laws, including DOT rules and regulations per Pamphlet 54 and 58. Must ensure branch compliance with all of Lakes Gas Co.'s policies and procedures. Additionally, must be able to meet the DOT service positions requirements and other duties as assigned. 

Reports directly to Regional or Branch Manager.

Requirements

  • Puts safety first in all aspects of the job: at the branch, at the customer site and on the road while driving.
  • Excellent Customer Service skill: courteous and friendly, mindful of customer property and always ready to help the customer get the most out of their Lakes Gas experience.
  • Knows all aspects of the Lakes Gas training program and uses learned expertise and field experience to provide input to improve the training program.
  • Capable of taking instruction and knows how to tactfully improve on those instructions as necessary.
  • Accepts manager directed workload but won’t hesitate to ask for more if dissatisfied. Lakes Gas is looking for both a follower and a leader.
  • Must be organized and efficient.

EXPECTATIONS FOR SINGLE AXEL DELIVERY TRUCKS:

  • Winter workload standard will be determined by Regional Manager and customer demand plus weekend work as required.
  • Bobtail will be maintained in excellent condition, ready for all delivery situations and subject to no-notice spot check inspections.
  • Vehicle readiness is never a question and always an example.
  • SAFE DRIVING AWARENESS, high sense of road conditions and driveway maneuvering:
  • The mindset must be that these are number one priorities at all times to be successful in the operation of a delivery truck.
  • Maintain DOT Hours of Service Work Requirements.
  • Adjust scheduling to allow variance when the Governor recognizes a Waiver of Time for DOT 
  • Hours of service.

MINIMUM ANNUAL EXPECTED WORK REQUIREMENTS

The Assistant Manager’s should expect to be scheduled for routed deliveries on a daily basis from the period of January 1st through March 31st. The Regional Manager may adjust the work schedule throughout the year as needed to meet needs of the branch and the company. The Assistant Manager needs to recognize that their compensation for performing non-delivery tasks will be tied to a commission payment, (see the compensation section). The more tasks an Assistant Manager is qualified to perform increases the options and potential commission an Assistant Manager can earn and advance.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid state driver’s license.
  • Valid Class “A” or “B” Commercial Driver’s License, HAZMAT endorsement, Tanker endorsement and does not have air brake restrictions.  
  • Valid Department of Transportation physical examination certification.
  • Completion of Department of Transportation HAZMAT training program every three years.
  • No moving violations for reckless or operating under the influence.
  • A motor vehicle record (MVR) review will be conducted annually to determine if a driver is qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle in accordance with regulations as defined in Section 391.25 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
  • Must qualify for insurability by the company's insurance carrier.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test prior to employment.
  • Subject to passing random drug and/or alcohol tests per DOT and company policies.
