About the role

Occupational Summary

This position will perform complex accounting tasks involved in managing the capital expenditure purchase order approval process, maintaining critical financial records related to capital projects, and monitoring/verifying/reconciling various accounts.

 

  Work Performed

  • Manage the process by which purchase orders with potential capital expenditures included are received, reviewed, and, when appropriate, approved.  This process includes the following:
    • Analyze related financial data such as invoices, vouchers and other documents.   
    • Conduct invaluable research to ensure that purchase orders (including capital and non-capital line items) are all properly coded and receive the correct accounting treatment.
    • Identify items that require further analysis as to whether they qualify as capital expenditures and work in tandem with Plant Accounting senior management to resolve these issues.
    • Maintain interface with departmental and University personnel (as well as vendors working with Duke) to obtain and provide information to verify or support financial records and ensure compliance with established University policies and procedures.
    • Prepare correspondence and answer inquiries regarding accounting information as required.
  • Prepare and maintain records of capital project expenditures, informing appropriate staff members of financial status.
  • Analyze financial information and compile complex financial reports and statements for utilization by higher management.
  • Continually develop proficiency and implement knowledge of various organizational tools here at Duke.  (SAP, WebCentral, Duke accounting methodology, etc.)
  • Participate in special projects and other duties related to the responsibilities described above.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires knowledge of general accounting & communications principles normally acquired through two years of post-secondary education.

 

Experience:

Work generally requires 3 years of experience in an accounting setting to become familiar with the accepted accounting practices involved in maintaining more complex financial records, reconciling accounting information and preparing financial statements.

A bachelor's degree in a field of study directly related to the specific position may be substituted for the education and two years of the experience requirement.  Experience with SAP and/or familiarity with Duke campus preferable.

Education

Experience

 

Work generally requires 3 years of experience in an accounting setting OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE to become knowledgeable of the accepted accounting practices involved in maintaining more complex financial records, reconciling accounting information and preparing financial statements.
