Job Description:

The Department of Labor has a great opportunity to join the Unemployment Insurance (UI) Tax Division as a UI Tax Field Representative and perform employer payroll verifications, status investigations, examine wage discrepancies in compliance with the Nebraska Employment Security law, and perform unemployment insurance denial and payment claim reviews to ensure unemployment insurance benefits have been appropriately granted or denied and allocated properly.

Successful candidate will be required to complete and pass a Federal Background Check, which includes being fingerprinted.

Schedule: 8am-5pm; Monday-Friday

Examples of Work

• Status Investigations: Investigate employment status and determine employer liability to the Unemployment Insurance Tax Laws. Determine appropriate type of account transfer and initiate actions. Investigate business status (bankruptcy, discontinued operations, and corporate dissolution). Investigate claims of independent contractor status. Write reports.

• Verify Employer Records: Resolve discrepancies between federal reports and state reports. Determine accurate payroll figures. Verify employer records when account is terminated to verify no payments are being made for services. Conduct payroll verification audits to preserve the integrity of the system. Conduct in-house verifications from information gathered and collected from employers. Initiate audit action when errors or fraud are suspected. Utilize laptop computer in Microsoft Windows Seven Enterprise environment, utilize Excel, Word, Access Laptop Audit Process and Outlook E-Mail applications.

• Collections: Collect delinquent employer report forms. Collect delinquent taxes and interest due. Conduct investigations to locate an employer when others have been unable to locate them. Negotiate payment plans with employers. Research property records to determine property ownership for replacement of real estate liens.

• Wage Record Investigations: Review employer records and determine accurate wage credits to which claimants are entitled. Interview claimants to determine employment dates and wage payments.

• Advisory: Advise employers, attorneys and accountants concerning all phases of the Employment Security Law. Assist employers in completing forms, computing voluntary tax payments and rate computations. Fields questions for other taxing authorities and refers employers to appropriate sources for action.

• Job related travel is required.


 

Requirements / Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications: Post high school coursework/training in public or business administration, finance, accounting, social/behavioral sciences or related field OR two years' experience in employment services, unemployment insurance or human services with responsibility for interviewing; analyzing and/or evaluating data to draw conclusions; assessing documents and records; or performing accounting functions with direct public contact.


Preferred Qualifications: Post high school education to include communications, speech and psychology. Three years' experience in fields such as accounting, bookkeeping, credit or financial institutions. Experience working in a regulated environment or working with the public to resolve problems or collections. Experience with personal computers, specifically operating Microsoft 11 Windows Enterprise environment with Excel, Word, Access, and Outlook applications. Must be able to lift and transport laptop computer. Spanish/English bilingual skills preferred.


Other: Must have a valid driver's license
