A Day in the Life

Medtronic’s Microelectronic Solutions location in Tempe, Arizona, is seeking a dynamic Senior Design Automation Engineer to lead the development, integration, and validation of advanced manufacturing systems for high-volume, precision production. This hybrid role combines expertise in Industrial automation process development, software automation engineering, and cross-functional collaboration to enable scalable, efficient, and compliant manufacturing solutions..

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  •  Lead the design, development, and validation of automated manufacturing processes and systems, including PLC programming (Allen-Bradley), SCADA/HMI development (Inductive Automation Ignition), and motion control (servo/stepper systems).
  • Develop and implement scalable, high-volume manufacturing processes for assembly, leveraging expertise in robotics, vision systems (Cognex/Keyence), and advanced automation platforms.
  • Collaborate across engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams to ensure seamless process transitions from product development to production.
  • Drive equipment specification, vendor collaboration, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and process validation (IQ/OQ/PQ).
  • Troubleshoot and optimize manufacturing systems, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards (FDA, 21 CFR Part 11, GAMP 5) and safety codes (NFPA, UL508A).
  • Support software lifecycle activities, including user requirements, system design, coding, testing, and documentation, for automation and MES integration.
  • Develop and maintain electrical schematics, BOMs, and CAD models (AutoCAD/SOLIDWORKS) for equipment design and upgrades.
  • Facilitate continuous improvement initiatives, leveraging Lean Six Sigma methodologies, DOE, and root cause analysis (RCA).

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of 4 years relevant experience in automation, process development, or manufacturing engineering or advanced degree plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in automation, process development, or manufacturing engineering

    Nice to Have:

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or related Engineering field.
    • 5+ years of experience in automation, process development, or manufacturing engineering.
    • Proficiency in PLC programming (Allen-Bradley RSLogix Studio 5000), SCADA/HMI (Ignition), and coding (Python, Java, CSS).
    • Expertise in automated equipment technologies, including robotics, and laser systems.
    • Strong knowledge of regulatory and validation standards (GAMP 5, 21 CFR Part 11).
    • Hands-on experience with process equipment, tooling, and high-speed automation systems.
    • Familiarity with CAD software (AutoCAD, SOLIDWORKS), GD&T, and statistical tools (Minitab).
    • Experience in medical device, pharmaceutical, or electronic industries.
    • Knowledge of MES integration, SQL databases, and Industry 4.0 platforms.
    • Certified Lean Six Sigma Green or Black Belt.
    • Strong communication, project management, and problem-solving skills.
