About the role

Are you ready to take your camp experience to the next level? We are looking for energetic and organized Lead Summer Camp Counselors to join our Summer Daze team. In this role, you’ll go beyond traditional counseling to serve as a key partner to our Camp Director, ensuring our operations run smoothly while creating a safe and unforgettable summer for our campers.

Program runs June 10, 2026 – August 7, 2026.

Campers are a mixture of students Grade 1 – Grade 7.

$18/hr.; 32-hour work week.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Operational Leadership: Assisting the Camp Director with administrative tasks, such as managing camper check-ins/outs, creating and distributing newsletters, and handling parent communications.
  • Supervision & Safety: Providing constant supervision for your assigned cohort during activities, meals, and field trips.
  • Program Planning: Leading age-appropriate games and activities that spark creativity, teamwork, and social growth.
  • Direct Support: Assisting younger campers (grades 1-2) with daily needs, including hygiene and sunscreen application.
  • Team Collaboration: Coordinating schedules and working closely with other counselors to ensure a cohesive and high-quality camp experience.

 

Required Skills & Core Competencies

  • Planning & Organizing: Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple administrative tasks and camper needs effectively.
  • Emergency Readiness: Competence in basic first aid techniques and CPR to ensure immediate and effective response in medical emergencies.
  • Safety & Risk Assessment: Ability to conduct risk assessments to identify potential hazards and follow camp protocols to minimize risks.
  • Crisis Decision-Making: Demonstrated ability to make swift, effective decisions during unexpected situations or crises, such as inclement weather or camper conflicts.
  • A Child-Centric Heart: A genuine interest in working with children, showing patience and a positive attitude.
  • Strong Communication: Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with campers, parents, and fellow staff.
  • Adaptability & Collaboration: Ability to adjust to changing conditions and work effectively as part of a team to foster camaraderie.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)  and Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or a closely related field.
  • Experience: Previous experience working with children in a camp or educational setting within the last three (3) years.
  • Certification:  Current CPR/First Aid or the ability to get certified within the first 7 days of work.
  • License: Valid drivers license (in good standing based on UMS standards)



The University of Maine at Farmington employees are Mandatory Reporters with the exception of UMF’s licensed, clinical medical providers (including athletic trainers) and mental health providers and their clinical interns when working in their capacity as providers.
