About the role

Grand Valley State University seeks an Assistant or Associate Professor in Special Education. Position begins in August 2025. Applicants must have a Doctorate in Special Education or a closely related field by August 2025. Additionally, applicants must have: demonstrated ability to teach courses related to students with autism spectrum disorder, a record of successful teaching or school-based experience at the PK-12 level with students with disabilities; demonstrated potential for teaching at the university level; and a record of, or potential for, scholarship. This position requires onsite, in person responsibilities.

Primary Duties:

  • Primarily teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the area of special education with emphasis on autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
  • This position requires onsite, in person responsibilities; Supervise teacher candidates in the field; Advise students in undergraduate and graduate special education programs; Develop a research agenda and record of publications and presentations related to the discipline; Assist with the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of special education curriculum for all programs; Coordinate undergraduate and graduate ASD programs; Provide service to the department, college, university, profession and/or community;
  • Perform other duties as required/assigned by leadership.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Doctorate in Special Education or a closely related field;
  • Demonstrated ability to teach courses related to students with autism spectrum disorder;
  • Specialized knowledge of theory and pedagogy practices related to special education;
  • Demonstrated potential for teaching at the university level;
  • Record of relevant scholarship or evidence of an emerging research agenda in special education or related field;
  • Demonstrated experience of quality teaching in a pK-12 classroom setting;
  • Willingness and ability to teach courses in a face-to-face, online or hybrid format, as well as on weekends, and/or other non-traditional times; this position requires onsite, in person responsibilities;
  • Willingness and ability to travel for instruction and student supervision;
  • Effective oral, written, and collaborative interpersonal skills;
  • Engagement in collaborative endeavors with colleagues (e.g., research, teaching, curriculum development, etc.);
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  • Lead and facilitate undergraduate and graduate programming for ASD teacher candidates.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Specialized knowledge and experience working with autism spectrum disorder;
  • Minimum of 3 years of successful teaching in pK-12 classrooms or other school-based experience;
  • Certification credentials; e.g., teacher certificate or Behavior Analyst with demonstrated school experience;
  • Record of quality teaching at undergraduate and/or graduate levels;
  • Evidence of student-centered and relationship-centered teaching;
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching with an intersectional lens;
  • Ability to coordinate and manage field-based experiences;
  • Experience with using various modalities of instruction including face-to-face, online synchronous, asynchronous, hybrid, and distance learning technologies.

Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Some travel may be required.

Department: Teaching and Learning

Minimum starting salary for Assistant Professor: $64,000; commensurate with experience

Minimum starting salary for Associate Professor: $70,000; commensurate with experience.
