JOB SUMMARY:
Collaborates with the health care team using evidence based practice, demonstrating accountability, respect for
patients, families and coworkers, while providing safe and optimal patient outcomes. Promotes continuity of care
by communicating effectively with interdisciplinary team and family as appropriate. Directs the work of the support
staff in the provision of care. Performs general nursing duties using critical thinking skills with minimal supervision.
Able to work with the age specific populations according to the setting.
JOB DUTIES: RATING
1. Assessment: Demonstrates the ability to use evidence based assessment techniques and
instruments in collecting pertinent data to perform an age specific assessment and reassessment on
all patients per policy, involving patient/resident and family. Prioritizes data collection activities
based on the patient’s immediate condition or anticipated needs. Synthesizes available data,
information and knowledge relevant to the situation to identify patterns and variances.
2. Plan of Care: Derives diagnoses from the assessment. Identifies and prioritizes expected
outcomes and educational goals. Develops a comprehensive plan of care individualized to patient
characteristics/situation/learning needs in conjunction with each patient and family. Establishes a
timeline and utilizes the plan to provide direction to other members of the health care team. Revises
plan of care appropriately.
3. Implementation: Collaborates with physicians and interdisciplinary colleagues communicating
pertinent information related to patient care needs. Implements the plan of care in a safe and timely
manner. Uses evidence based interventions and treatments specific to the diagnosis or problem.
Employs critical thinking in decision making.
4. Evaluation: In collaboration with the patient and health care team, conducts a systematic, ongoing
evaluation of outcomes according to the plan and indicated timeline. Uses ongoing assessment
data to revise the diagnoses, outcomes, plan, implementation and education as needed.
5. Documentation: Documentation meets current standards and policies including use of electronic
modules. Documentation reflects an accurate portrayal of the patient condition, interventions, and
outcomes using appropriate language and grammar, and is completed in a timely manner. Uses
standard hand-off tool when transferring care from one provider to another.
6. Patient Education: Provides health teaching including the family in addressing diagnosis,
medications, healthy life-style, age-specific needs, activities of daily living and preventive self care
and evaluates patient/family understanding.
7. Performance Improvement: Participates in quality initiatives focusing on matters that will improve
patient outcomes. Works in teams and small groups to address Shared governance council work or
Lean events that are convened for patient care or improvement in departmental efficiency.
8. Leadership: Shares knowledge and skills by mentoring others. Directs coordination of care across
settings and among caregivers including oversight of licensed and unlicensed personnel in any
assigned or delegated tasks. Engages in team work as a team player and a team builder.
Integrates ethical standards in all areas of practice.
Specific Duties for OB Labor/Delivery Nurse:
1. Demonstrates competency and accuracy in the care of the laboring patient by performing accurate
application, perinatal centricity and fetal monitor interpretation of fetal monitor strips, and evaluation
of patient’s vitals, labor progression, and changes in patient condition.
2. Demonstrates the ability to assess the OB outpatient based on evidence based assessment
techniques. Notifies the physician of assessments and interventions. Demonstrates accuracy of
outpatient charges.
PART 3: PRIMARY JOB COMPETENCIES
3. Demonstrates the ability to assist physicians with procedures and performs services requiring
technical skills. Exhibits an understanding of procedures and is able to explain the procedures to
the patient.
4. Identifies life threatening situations and responds accordingly utilizing protocols from NRP, BLS,
ACLS, stable programs. Notifies appropriate personnel including Rapid Response Team/ Nursing
Supervisors, and Physician. Demonstrates competency in the care of the delivery patient in
receiving epidural and intrathecal analgesia. Recognizes side effects and follows appropriate
protocol to resolve side effects.
