About the role

Position Information:

  • Start Date: June 16 – December 5, 2025
  • Hours: 40 hours per week (Monday – Friday, 9:00 – 5:00pm)
  • Location: Preference Los Angeles, CA; or New York, NY but open to DC and remote locations
  • Compensation: $20.00/hour

Intern, Podcasts – Marketplace:

Eager to gain hands-on podcast experience at the most listened to business news show in the country and on public radio? The Marketplace Podcast team is looking for an intern to collaborate on our podcast offerings, in particular our shows that teach kids and young people about money including our award-winning podcast for kids and families, Million Bazillion.

This internship is a great opportunity if you want to pursue a career in explainer journalism and podcasting or have an interest in scripted non-fiction podcasts for kids and young people. You will work closely with a small production team to get experience in all aspects of podcast creation and production while learning how to use humor and skits to answer the tough questions that kids have about money and the economy. Be ready to gain real experience in creating multi-channel digital content to help reach our audience. Additionally, this role offers the opportunity to collaborate with other shows in Marketplace’s diverse portfolio, including a chatty daily news show to award-winning long-form narrative journalism on climate solutions and public policy, to a lifestyle show for millennials about money.

 

Key Learning Goals:

Our Podcast teams are small and collaborative. You will have the opportunity to learn a variety of skills -- from technical skills, like recording and editing audio, to soft skills like communication, critical thinking, and teamwork. Through this immersive learning experience, you will:

  • Improve technical skills (editing audio, recording audio, transcription programs, etc.)
  • Improve soft skills (communication, critical thinking, leadership, host management)
  • Hone news judgement and learn the Marketplace “voice”
  • Learn how to create educational and entertaining explainers for a kids and family audience
  • Become proficient in writing in the voice of the show in scripts, web copy, and podcast showpages
  • Be proficient in all aspects of production by the end of the internship

 

Responsibilities:

In this hands-on role, you will assist the production team in the following ways:

  • Research and pitch stories and approaches or motifs for episodes
  • Collect and gather tape from listeners
  • Prep hosts and learn how to work with hosts
  • Write scripts for explainers, skits, etc.
  • Create showpages to help further the audience’s understanding and fuel curiosity on a subject
  • Find sources and conduct pre-interviews
  • Book Guests
  • Prep interviews
  • Participate in team meetings and edits
  • Prepare transcriptions to make the show accessible to non-hearing audience
  • Other tasks to help aid in the production of episodes and seasons

  • Participate in robust on-boarding experience

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduating senior in an undergraduate program, enrolled in a graduate program, or have earned a degree within the last 12 months
  • Must be able to work 40 hours per week (Monday – Friday, roughly 9:00 – 5:00pm) for the duration of this internship
  • Demonstrate interest/experience in a news organization
  • Familiar with journalism and/or podcasting through classes or internships
  • Familiarity with journalism ethics

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Another applicable internship experience (in a public radio newsroom, on a daily news podcast, etc.)
  • Familiarity editing audio (we will train on specific program if needed)
