Mobile Engineering Manager

As a Mobile Engineering Manager at tastytrade, you’ll be part of the team that builds out the retail brokerage business and supports our other business initiatives. We care about the speed and stability of our back-end systems as much as we care about the experience our customer-facing applications create. Our architecture is consistently evolving as our business grows and we face different technical challenges, but always with a focus on practicality and performance. 

You’ll help to create an environment for our engineers to succeed by providing mentorship, meeting with stakeholders, contributing to our culture, and ensuring team efficiency and growth. We have a native Android app for the phone form factor, and native iOS applications for both iPhone and iPad. Our codebase includes a transpiled Java library which handles interactions with the tastytrade API and provides common functionality across our customer-facing trading platforms.

What You’ll Do: 

Ensure that our mobile team rapidly delivers new features and improvements in the tastytrade client trading applications while maintaining stability and quality. You’ll work closely with our product management team to organize, identify, and assign work based on priority and importance. 

Technical Leadership 

• Serve as a technical leader for the mobile team in partnership with our engineering managers and engineering leadership as well as managing individual contributors. 
• Drive the continued development of long-term technical strategy for mobile and broader front-end developer experience. 
• Establish technical vision and lead efforts to architect, build, and launch solutions. 
• Balance engineering time between new features and foundational improvements (architecture, CI/CD, automated testing and release management strategy). 
• Increase engineer quality of life and enablement through process improvement and tooling. 
• Interact directly with the tastytrade business and product teams to capture and translate requirements and technical direction into production-quality code. 
• Collaborate cross-functionally to align technical initiatives and decisions. 

Hands-on Development 

• You’ll be expected to take point on complex engineering challenges and provide guidance for the mobile team. 
• Foster high-quality software development through code reviews and pair-programming. 
• Participate in coding, debugging, and optimization tasks. 
• Build efficient, reliable, performant, and scalable solutions. 
• Prototype new technologies and systems when needed to unblock the team. 

Mentorship & Leadership 

• Mentor, guide, and support the career growth of individual contributors. 
• Hold regular 1:1s and provide clear feedback around individual performance. 
• Draft, maintain, and deliver on quarterly OKRs and team goals. 
• Ensure individual goals are aligned with broader technology strategy, business strategy, and individual career development 
• Take responsibility for the performance of your team and the development of its individual members 
• Promote active involvement in building and evolving of tastytrade engineering culture 
• Partner with talent acquisition to improve hiring processes and fill team vacancies 
• Engage with other managers and technical leaders to ensure healthy communication, engineering concerns, and to create an environment where top level engineering talent wants to work 

Innovation 

• Identify opportunities impacting native product developers through business understanding. 
• Innovate and improve current solutions while building new capabilities. 
• Apply data-driven approach to measuring developer productivity and effectiveness. 
• Contribute to engineering best practices and standards.
