Season Duration & Locations:
- 1 position based out of The Dalles, OR from August 1, 2024 to October 31, 2024

What you will do:
The primary role of this position is to help conduct studies important to management of fisheries resources in the Columbia River basin. Some of the duties will include:
- Collect and record information on fish and fish habitats in the field by:
- Driving to boat ramp and fishing sites and enumerating trailers, boats, or anglers.
- Interview anglers about fishing time and species sought. Examine angler catch to determine species, measure length, and identify marks and tags.
- Collect biological samples such as snouts, scales, fin spines, fin clips, gut contents, gonads, and eggs. Preserve samples for laboratory analysis.
- Record interviews and fish measurements on data sheets and handheld computer (PDA).
- Deploy various fishing gear, such as, backpack and boat electrofishing equipment, gill nets, set lines, seines, fish traps and artificial substrates.
- Laboratory, data and supply maintenance:
- Review of field data on a daily basis and providing daily summary of angler effort and catch to Project Biologist and Project Leader.
- Enter data onto spreadsheets and databases, line verification of entered data.
- Assist with biological sample organization and transportation to the lab.
- Maintain and perform minor repairs on equipment such as, checking oil level of vehicles, and changing lights. Clean vehicles and sampling equipment.

Working Conditions:
- Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor. Position is eligible for overtime. Work shifts vary on a weekly basis but requires working every weekend.
- Requires travel to study sites in Oregon and Washington; work on weekends, at night, and in inclement weather, often in 10 hr shifts. Requires working alone daily, extensive driving to study sites daily; work on weekends, and frequently in inclement weather. Occasionally involves lifting and exertion for short periods. Employee must be able to communicate with a variety of personalities in a professional manner.
Requirements/Requested Skills:
Minimum qualifications are not established for this position; however, we are seeking applicants with the following experience or skills. Preference for interviews may be given to candidates with these skills and background:
- Requires a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to conduct field work under a variety of weather conditions ranging from heat in summer to cold in winter.
- Experience conducting fish surveys, identifying adult fish species (especially salmonids)
- Experience collecting biological samples from fish and accurately recording field data
- Anyone who possess or are in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences. <
