SUMMARY

The Bus Operations Division Training Specialist facilitates and conducts operation and customer service training for Bus Operations. This is accomplished by effectively planning and organizing training for the re-instruction of veteran Bus Operations employees in the proper and safe method of providing bus transportation in accordance with state and federal laws, rules and regulations, policies, and procedures. This position includes working varying shifts to accommodate training schedules, including evenings, weekends, holidays, special events, and during inclement weather. This is a safety-sensitive position subject to FTA drug and alcohol compliance.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts classroom style training programs and one-on-one sessions for adult learners
  • Provides classroom and practical re-certification, refresher training, and retraining, ensuring all required training is scheduled, completed, and accurately documented. 
  • Instruct bus operators regarding safety, service, scheduling, defensive driving techniques, and customer service expectations.
  • Working knowledge of all aspects of ADA bus regulations and operations, including vehicle operations, safety, and training. Keeps staff current on changes to ADA rules and regulations.
  • Possess and maintain knowledge of current laws and state and federal regulations.
  • Maintain proficiency in skills and knowledge related to operations of over-the-road, transit vehicles.
  • Ensure proper training of employees.
  • Assist in the preparation of training materials.
  • Communicate effectively with operations staff regarding training schedules
  • Maintains professional demeanor and appearance
  • Handle multiple tasks accurately and effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Provide quality internal and external customer service.
  • Conducts training needs assessments and makes appropriate recommendations to management.
  • Other duties as assigned to ensure the efficient operation of the department.
  • As part of your responsibility to support the CATS Safety Culture, report safety concerns and issues through the various methods established by CATS as outlined in the ASP.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Sufficient training, education, and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the above tasks and possession of the following knowledge and abilities:
  • Excellent and proven written, oral, interpersonal communication, organizational, analytical, and follow-through skills.
  • Provide instruction to students in both a classroom and on the road environment.
  • Maintain a safe environment for both students and instructors.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and the ability to perform well under stress.
  • Work independently with limited supervision.
  • Work odd and unusual hours as assigned; work varying shifts to accommodate training schedules, including evenings, weekends, holidays, special events, and during inclement weather.
  • Must be able to work well with people at all levels of the organization, and to employ discretion in handling confidential and proprietary information appropriately.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession of a Class B CDL with a passenger endorsement without any restrictions
  • High school diploma with five (5) years of transit operations experience, or an associate degree earned from an accredited college/university with three (3) years of transit experience.
  • Five (5) years of combined experience working in transit operations and teaching/training
  • Must have knowledge of adult learning techniques. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills;
  • The ability to coach and engage employees in the learning process. 
  • This position is considered “Safety Sensitive” under FTA guidelines and will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing. Candidates must be able to pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen, criminal background, and DMV check.
