Job Summary

Assume responsibility of developing and maintaining a technically proficient section of the clinical laboratory while meeting standards set by peer review organizations. Maintain administrative duties that ensure proper operation of the section.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: Associate Degree in Medical Technology or Bachelor Degree from a regionally recognized accredited college or university with courses in the physical and biological sciences
Minimum Years of Experience: 4 Years of recent relevant experience in a clinical laboratory and other relevant experience
Substitutable Education & Experience: None
Required Certifications/Licensure: MLS/MT or MLT certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC)OR CLS certification by the National Credentialing Agency (NCA) for Laboratory Personnel OR equivalent certification from state or government  OR an equivalent combination of education and acceptable clinical laboratory experience.

Essential Functions

Knowledge and Expertise:            

• Process laboratory specimens related to the department supervised.   
• Perform and monitor the performance of test procedures using manual and/or  instrumental techniques          
• Organize, update, perform, monitor and document quality control and preventive     maintenance program in section.          
• Monitor proper handling of proficiency testing.      
• Perform trouble-shooting procedures on all assigned department equipment,  communicate with service, and relay appropriate information to appropriate personnel; document appropriately           
• Serve as a technical resource/go-to person performing as a key operator of a  laboratory instrument; train employees on its operation, troubleshooting, and updates.  
• Perform quality assurance activities such as process improvement analysis (PI/CQI)  to enhance productivity, turn-around times, and overall service of the laboratory  department.            
• Review patient and instrument data for accuracy and maintain proper records (i.e.,  quality control reports
• Recognize abnormal results, evaluate and correlate data with other test  results/diagnosis; interpret appropriately and conduct follow-up action if required   
• Perform proper notification of abnormal results per policy.     
• Demonstrate knowledge of regulatory agencies (COLA, OSHA, CLIA, JCAHO) and  oversee accreditation preparation and inspections.      
• Adhere to safety policies and procedures as established by LMC; be a role model for  other staff and make suggestions for to improve safety conditions.    
• Provide patient care/support that is appropriate to the cognitive, physical, and  emotional needs of the patient group served.       
• Evaluate and implement new test procedures/new instruments, recognize/review  current procedures for needed updates or corrections.      
• Develop/revise laboratory procedures/manuals, reports, and other documents.   
• Train students on technical procedures and equipment and teach in a classroom  setting to students or staff (lecture/continuing education).      
• Meet requirements for General Supervisor as listed in CSF42 493.1463.
• Clinical Administrative: 10%   Maintain supply inventory; initiate order requests and oversee hospital biannual inventory.  Conduct follow-up action on backorders; Research all section complaints and resolve concerns.  Keep pathologists a
