Environments Manager - Senior Technical Engineer

Overview

You will act as a Senior Technical Manager of environments, applications and data for large programmes. You will manage available frameworks and tools to drive the activity of environments and data management across IT to focus on the needs of the client and manage test environment planning and bookings. You must have a wide range of experience across many technical platforms with a high-level understanding of IT architecture, design, networking, application operational service and support.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for co-ordination of all test environment delivery activities including provision, configuration, application deployment and validation
• Coordinate planning and scheduling of environment for multiple phases within a project and/or multiple small projects
• Forecast environment and data requirements based on anticipated future demand from multiple application teams
• Responsible for implementing and managing the environment process and strategy
• Responsible for monitoring and controlling the performance of test environments
• Communicate test environment availability to stakeholders
• Measure and monitor progress to ensure environments are delivered on time and within budget, and that they meet or exceed expectations
• Provide technical guidance to enable others in solving technical queries
• Perform system deployment and upgrade activities of CRM and middleware systems (manual and automated)
• Recommend test system architecture configuration to meet project requirements
• Configure systems and data to meet project requirements
• Generate environment systems descriptions and architectural documentation of test systems to meet project requirements
• Manage data catalogue, data creation and cleanup activities, and test data compliance
• Troubleshoot, triage and resolve system and application issues across a wide range of systems, applications and infrastructure
• Track the environment progress and proactively find issues, and work to improve the process by defining RCA and other assets.
• Ensure that appropriate communication and reporting is performed, keeping all the relevant stakeholders informed
• Lead and manage a team, offering the appropriate balance of supervision and empowerment, ensuring all members are adhering to engineering best practices
• Manage hardware installation, migration and decommissioning activities
• Prepare physical infrastructure in support of project test requirements, including hardware installation, configuration, cabling and equipment requirements for project activities

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related field, or equivalent work experience

• Desirable:
• ISTQB Foundation Certification
• Additional course or certification in Quality Engineering
• Certification IT Service Management Certification (ITIL) and Cloud computing fundamentals

Essential skills

• Ability to communicate and work closely with the project managers, application development and testing teams on environments planning
• Identifies environment priorities by assessing project objectives, such as efficiency, estimating relevance, time and costs
• Good understanding of infrastructure, network, applications and middleware
• Good understanding on the application deployment process
• Experience of introducing new concepts or strategies that significantly improve the way business is done
• Ability to consistently deliver to deadlines
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to lead/influence technical teams
• Strong business analysis and organizational skills
• Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
• Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex systems issues
• Coding and scripting ability to perform system deployments
• Ability to generate graphical system architectures (Visio, Draw.io, etc)
• Ability to carry out hands on tasks such as hardware installation, system configuration, physical troubleshooting
• Ability to perform physical complex cabling (copper, fibre), and make cable connection terminations (CAT 5/6, PSTN)

Desired Skills

• Knowledge of relevant Test Environment & software management tools: Atlassian products, Jenkins, Ansible, Docker, GitHub, Subversion
• Data Centre management knowledge
• Cloud concepts and virtualisation knowledge

Experience

• 3+ years of previous Environment management or relevant experience
• Telecoms expertise, proficient in Fixed and Mobile network technologies and terminology
