Job Summary: The Horticulture Technician safely completes maintenance, documentation, and improves plant collections and seasonal displays within available resources. The Horticulture Technician can work in a variety of areas to meet the needs and goals of the department, but is typically assigned to one team that focuses on and maintains a specific area. This position will typically be assigned to the Interior Conservatory & grounds around the Conservatory (paid visitor experience areas). This role supports departmental and facility goals, mission, and values with a strong emphasis on customer service.

Additional Information: This is a full-time non-exempt position. This position is eligible for the Conservatory's benefit package offered to full-time employees, which includes medical, dental and vision insurance, company paid Life/AD&D/Short-Term and Long-Term Disability insurance, participation in the Ohio Public Employees Retirement Program (OPERS), optional 457(b) Deferred Compensation plan, generous Paid Time Off (PTO), and complimentary membership to the Conservatory.

Compensation: $16/hr

Responsibilities:

  • Supports and administers maintenance programs, including irrigation, fertilization, pest and disease control, and pruning for efficient operation and improved horticulture practices in assigned area.

  • Monitors, reports, and treats pests, diseases, disorders and environmental concerns within the Integrated Pest Management program.

  • Leads and trains volunteers and interns.

  • Assists with installation and removal of seasonal flower displays.

  • Performs garden maintenance duties including but not limited to: weeding, trimming, mulching, blowing, planting, and watering.

  • Provides information to the Associate Director of Horticulture regarding plant accessions, removals, transfers, and label requirements. Labels plants in a timely manner and assists with installation of signage.

  • Supports snow removal duties in winter, requiring flexibility in scheduling.

  • Interacts with the public, volunteers, employees, and peer institutions by answering questions, developing fact sheets, and leading tours.

  • Researches and develops knowledge and identification of plant collections, specializing in assigned areas or collections.

  • Ensures proper use and care of equipment and follows state and federal laws that address the safe use of equipment and the application, storage, and disposal of pesticides.

  • Promptly observes and reports concerns regarding horticultural display or safety.

  • Performs other duties as assigned and demonstrates focus on serving the visitors and guests of the Conservatory.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.

  • 1 year prior experience in landscape/horticulture, plant maintenance, plant identification and equipment use is preferred.

  • Knowledge of basic software programs (Word, Excel and Gmail).

  • Valid Driver’s License with the ability to provide own transportation to and from work sites if needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates proficient written and verbal communication skills when sharing horticulture knowledge to a variety of audiences such as the public, employees, volunteers, and peer institutions.

  • Ability to comfortably perform public speaking.

  • Ability to implement effective maintenance routines with strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to implement landscape and conservatory designs.
