About the role

We're looking for a Full-Stack Engineer (Internal Tooling) to join our Design Systems team as we aim to make Circle the top choice for creator/brand-led communities.

In this role, you'll build and maintain internal applications and automation tools that streamline our operations and improve team efficiency. You'll work across the full stack, creating user-friendly interfaces, designing APIs, integrating with third-party services, and building systems that help our design team work smarter. You'll participate in all stages of the development lifecycle, from understanding workflow problems to deploying production solutions. As a full-stack engineer, you'll identify process bottlenecks, build custom tools to solve them, integrate multiple services (Slack, Notion, Figma, etc.), and create dashboards that provide visibility into design operations. This role requires strong technical versatility, comfort working across frontend and backend, and an understanding of how to build practical tools that solve real workflow challenges.

What you’ll be doing

  • Build full-stack internal applications using modern web technologies (Next.js, React, Node.js, databases)
  • Create tools that integrate multiple services and APIs (Slack, Notion, Figma, etc.) to streamline workflows
  • Design and implement databases and APIs to support internal tooling needs
  • Work with LLMs and AI APIs to automate classification, analysis, and reporting tasks
  • Develop dashboards and interfaces that provide visibility into design team operations
  • Identify workflow inefficiencies and build custom solutions to address them
  • Integrate with our Ruby on Rails backend and existing systems where needed
  • Work closely with design leadership to understand operational needs and iterate on solutions
  • Deploy and maintain internal tools, ensuring reliability and usability
  • Improve the quality of our internal tooling codebase and establish best practices

What you’ll need to be successful

  • Proficiency in English at CEFR C2 / ILR Level 5 (spoken, written, reading)
  • Strong alignment with Circle's values
  • 5+ years of experience as a Full-Stack Engineer building web applications
  • Strong proficiency in modern JavaScript/TypeScript, React, and Next.js (or similar frameworks)
  • Experience with backend development: API design, databases (SQL/NoSQL), server-side logic
  • Comfortable working with third-party APIs and integrating multiple services
  • Experience building internal tools, admin dashboards, or workflow automation systems
  • Strong judgment about when to build custom solutions vs. use existing tools
  • Pragmatic approach to technical decisions - balancing speed with quality for internal tooling
  • A desire to work in an environment which values speed of iteration and individual autonomy, while also embracing personal accountability and the ability to collaborate effectively as part of a dynamic team
  • Motivation to understand team workflows, identify pain points, and deliver practical solutions
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with a certain level of ambiguity
  • Adaptable with the ability to change direction quickly if necessary
  • Familiar with agile software development principles
  • Experience working on a fully distributed remote team

Bonus points

  • Experience with AI/LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.) for automation and classification
  • Previous experience building tools for design teams or creative workflows
  • Experience with workflow automation platforms (Zapier, Make, n8n)
