Position Summary

The Executive Director of China Programs oversees the University’s academic programs with partner institutions in China. The director also negotiates and implements agreements with partner institutions and works to expand programs in those and other Chinese universities. The position reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Vice President of Joint Programs and Initiatives will direct this individual.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as an academic Vice-Dean of the Hubei University of Technology/UDM joint institute, also known as Detroit Green Technology Institute (DGTI).
  • Travel to China regularly, depending on need, for a minimum of 1-2 months, once or twice a year, with opportunities to teach in China.
  • Manage recruitment, hiring, and orientation of instructors for the China programs and work with the Colleges to coordinate teaching assignments.
  • Work closely with the University’s Vice President for Joint Programs and Initiatives.
  • Work with the University’s Vice President for Joint Programs and Initiatives on negotiating and implementing agreements with Chinese universities.
  • Support the success of courses taught for China programs through regular review, support of instructors, and addressing concerns.
  • Develop and distribute a faculty handbook for faculty teaching in the China programs.
  • Facilitate communications and meetings between UDM, support offices, and the China program staff office located in China (to be referred to as the China Office).
  • Work with the International Student Office and UDM staff to identify and address issues for Chinese students enrolled in on-campus UDM classes.
  • Advocate for international student issues on Detroit Mercy campus and connect with international student groups.
  • Collaborate closely with academic programs at UDM and universities in China in curriculum, course scheduling, and student services.
  • Collaborate and interact regularly with Detroit Mercy academic departments and Associate/Assistant Deans to ensure all students in the China programs are appropriately advised and supported to satisfy or achieve their program requirements.
  • Assist in developing and implementing recruiting events at partner Chinese Institutions.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact/liaison for UDM with the China Office and partner universities in China.
  • Develop and monitor a budget, including review and authorization of appropriate expenditures for the China programs in conjunction with the Academic Deans and UDM leadership.
  • Work with the International Student Office to organize events, assist with orientation, develop and update a China student handbook, and plan programs or other support initiatives for the China program students throughout the academic year.
  • Maintain regular contact and work with the Detroit Mercy admissions office staff to ensure the timely process of paperwork, student applications, and issuing of I-20s.
  • Work with partners in different time zones to respond to urgent matters after hours.
  • Serve as a positive and enthusiastic representative of UDM.

Requirements

  

Minimum Qualifications

Education -A doctorate degree.
Experience -Five years to seven years (Equivalent combination of education and employment).


Preferred Qualifications  

Ability to travel to China and stay for up   to several months.

   

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Effective computer skills in Excel, Word, PowerPoint. High level of attention to details. Ability to negotiate across cultural differences.


Physical Requirements

Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).


Work Environment

Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.


Licenses/Certifications

Ability to obtain passport and visa to China.

Anticipated Schedule

Work schedule is often the time zone and vacation/holiday schedule of China.
