About the role

Department Overview

This position provides technical support and works under direct supervision of a Pharmacist. Ensures that a licensed pharmacist properly checks all packing of products prior to product leaving the pharmacy. The technician is responsible for accurate production of sterile and non-sterile compounded medications, insuring productions and work environments are clean, records are accurate, inventory is stocked, batch production proceeds according to standard operating procedure(s), and on-demand production is prioritized and completed

according to specifications with accuracy and attention to detail. Additional responsibilities include: inventory

maintenance of controlled and non-controlled medications, inventory discrepancy reconciliation, pharmacy computer system order entry, workflow and compliance audits, supply and medication ordering, utilization of pharmacy-related technology, and performing other duties as assigned. This person is responsible to have knowledge of and perform responsibilities in accordance with rules established by the Oregon Board of Pharmacy, cGMP, FDA, applicable chapters of the United States Pharmacopeia, and/or other regulatory or advisory bodies deemed to be applicable to sterile and non-sterile compounding and pharmacy operations.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Prepare, mix, and compound sterile products, observing aseptic procedures and document lot numbers appropriately. Clean bench top, work surfaces, vertical and laminar flow hoods and associated equipment, discarding all non- preserved and or non-labeled solutions. Maintain work area in neat and orderly condition. Open and mark by date various solutions (fresh and cleaning), medications, and additives if applicable.

  • Maintain inventories of controlled and non-controlled substances, solutions, and associated supplies and equipment. Generate orders for appropriate vendors to acquire replenishment stock.
  • Check-in drug delivery orders and maintain appropriate supply inventory. Place electronic drug supply orders. Ensure appropriate contract assignment before purchase of medications, e.g. 340b, GPO, WAC, etc. Maintain, manage, and clean inventory of bulk chemicals and supplies.

  • Perform regulatory compliance responsibilities such as recording daily refrigerator temperatures, perform audits, check for and track expired medications, and uphold departmental and institutional policies.

  • Computer related duties and special projects as directed by the pharmacies.

     

  • Other assigned duties  

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma,

  • Active State of Oregon Pharmacy Technician License  AND

     

  • 2 years of pharmacy work experience, or equivalent additional education; AND

     

  • Certification from the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or National Health-career Association. Certification must be maintained.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Knowledge of common pharmaceutical compounding equipment, technology, and practices.
  • Experience with aseptic technique, IV admixture.
  • Familiarity with medical and scientific terms/nomenclature.
  • Ability to perform basic pharmaceutical mathematics calculations.
  • Compounded pharmaceuticals database reference knowledge.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years experience in a compounding institution, compounding community pharmacy, or hospital/IV/clean room experience.
  • Experience in compliance or regulatory position related to compounding of sterile and non-sterile pharmacy preparations

Additional Details

  • Repetitive use of hands and fingers, e.g. dexterity to operate and manipulate office and compounding equipment as required.
  • May sit, walk, or stand up to 7 hours per regular shift
  • Ability to work extended hours as needed.
  • Normal range of hearing and vision to perform work and communicate
  • Stooping or kneeling, i.e. to access lower shelves/drawers, picking up items from floor, etc.
  • Lifting and carrying light loads up to 50 pounds, reaching above shelves
