About the role

  • Provides care appropriate to condition, age, and ability, the psychosocial and physical needs of patients, including adult, pediatric, geriatric, and the general patient population within the CNA’s scope of practice and hospital policy.
  • Provides patient care
  • Patient care is inclusive of bed bath, shower, tub bath, oral hygiene, combing hair, back care, dressing patients, changing bed linen, cleaning overbed table and bedside stand, straightening room and any other general care as necessary throughout the shift.
  • Provides general care such as positioning patients, lifting and turning patients, applying/utilizing special equipment, assisting in use of bedpan or commode and ambulating patients.
  • Prepares patients for meals; services and removes food trays and assists with meals or feeds patients if necessary. Distributes drinking water and snacks to patients as applicable.
  • Answers patient’s call lights, anticipates patients’ needs, and makes regular rounds of assigned patients.
  • Makes rounds at least once an hour when possible.
  • Obtains and records vital signs, weight, intake-output and reports to RN
  • Observes patient’s mental and physical conditions, reports any changes, complaints or any abnormalities to RN throughout the shift.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to RNs, staff members, medical staff and other providers.
  • Enters and verifies patient data in the EHR system per current standards and policies.
  • Maintains equipment, utility areas and support areas in a clean and neat environment.
  • Transport patients as delegated
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
  • Restocks and orders supplies as needed.
  • Answers telephone/intercom in a polite manner. Communicates information to the appropriate personnel/family.
  • Takes responsibility of and/or supports the Health Unit Coordinator as needed on the floor.
  • Assists with patient admissions, discharge, and transfers.
  • Optimizes patient safety and quality.
  • Orients new employees when necessary.
  • Responds promptly to changes in workload, adjusting assignments as necessary to achieve optimal productivity and efficiency.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:

  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred
  • CNA license required
  • BLS certification required prior to providing patient care
  • Previous patient care experience preferred
  • Completion of Hayward Medical Center PCT training required within 30 days of hire (PCTs only)
