Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories’ (SEL) Communications and Cybersecurity group is seeking a Software Engineering Intern to join our R&D team – could it be you that we’re looking for?
If you have an interest and background in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, enjoy programming in Python, and have an interest in how the hardware platforms that run your code are made, this role could be for you! This internship is a programming-centric role embedded in our electrical engineering hardware design team. Typical work will include creating applications that provide analytical insights into the products we make using a variety of data sources. It also has ample opportunities for developing firmware and other product validation tools. The ideal candidate for this position will be able to work part-time during the school year and full-time during the summer. This role is on-site at our Pullman, WA, R&D center, where you’ll be working alongside a talented team of mentors ready to help you grow your skills and kickstart your engineering career!
As a Software Engineering Intern, a typical day might include the following:
Supporting SEL’s software development process
Verifying that software meets stakeholder requirements.
Implementing firmware/software designs.
Providing support to engineering staff as needed.
Following engineering quality assurance procedures like holding reviews or authoring tests.
This job might be for you if:
You are a current student pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent with at least one year of technical coursework completed.
Have programming experience in Python, C++, C#, or equivalent OO programming language.
You are able to execute and document defined testing procedures.
You have strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills.
You are excited to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities as you grow your career.
You enjoy working cooperatively in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience using scripting languages, such as Python, Javascript, Perl, Ruby
Practical knowledge of developing Linux/embedded applications
Knowledge of web frameworks and tools like Flask, Jinga, charts.js
Experience using revision control and source code management systems such as Git

Pay Range Data
($17.00 - $28.50 per hour) Our intern pay is determined based on the internship role (the work you would be doing) and your year in school (when you plan to graduate). Talk to your recruiter if you are curious about the rate for your year in school.
