About the job:

Responsible for the overall reliability of all financial and accounting information for the various Tribal business programs and enterprises, including budget coordination and management.

 Here’s what you’ll be doing:

Responsible for coordinating the budget process and schedule, including communications to the selected budget panel, for each fiscal year including, but not limited to the following.

Gathering financial data from different divisions/departments to develop comprehensive budget proposals. 

Maintaining the Chart of Accounts.

Creating budget templates and forecasting future revenue and expense projections when necessary.

Analyzing historical financial data to inform budget planning. 

Assist in presenting complex financial information in a clear and concise manner, including proposed budgets to the budget panel and tribal membership during informational meetings.

Responsible for monitoring tribal budgets and coordinating quarterly reviews with divisions/departments.

Function as the financial liaison coordinator and point person ensuring each division has the appropriate resources, including contact information for both their tribal and grant funded budgets, to be able to make informed decisions on the appropriate use of tribal assets.

Monitoring all budget modifications for appropriateness and proper authorization.

Completing budget modifications in necessary systems, keeping them in sync at all times and up to date.

Assisting in the preparation of weekly and monthly financial statements for the various departments and business entities of the Tribal Government.

Reviewing financial transactions for accuracy and proper coding 

Ensuring adherence to internal controls and accounting standards and related policies

Identifying trends and assisting in recommendations for adjustments to the budget as needed

Assisting with monitoring financial plans versus operational results. Provide reports, analysis and statements for senior management decisions and strategic planning as required.

Providing interpretation of variances from budgets and standards as well as analysis of indirect costs to provide advice to senior management.

·       Assisting with the completion of the annual independent audit.

·       Cross trains in other accounting roles, serving as a backup or filling in as needed.

 What you’ll need to be successful:

·       Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field with five years of experience or Associate’s degree in Accounting or related field with 12 years’ experience  

·       Familiarity with accounting and management systems software as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint), and the internet including cloud-based software

·       Excellent communication skills – especially written communication for policy creation and process documentation purposes

·       Independent decision-making skills supported by excellent analytical skills and professional judgement.

·       Ability to maintain organization, meet deadlines, and possess integrity, confidentiality, and discretion in handling confidential information

·       Willingness and capability to learn various positions and pivot quickly from one to the other

·       Must successfully pass all applicable background checks and drug screens

Preferred qualifications:

·       Bachelor’s degree in accounting with 3 – 5 years’ experience in governmental accounting

·       Familiarity with GASB pronouncements, and familiarity with Tribal operations and budgeting is recommended
