Job Summary:
The Loss Prevention Security Specialist (LPSS) plays a key role in protecting property and financial loss caused by theft; and supports overall store safety and security. This role requires vigilance, integrity, and the ability to make sound decisions to resolve challenging situations. LPSS’ work closely with loss prevention personnel and store leaders to ensure a secure shopping environment through effective loss prevention strategies and practices.
Essential Functions of the Position:
• Post at the front of the store to be the overt impression of control for our customers and visual deterrence to potential shoplifters, vandalism, and other suspicious activities.
• Actively greet customers as they enter the store, interact with community members, and de-escalate incidents.
• Conduct regular patrols of the store to increase visual security presence, observe/report/address suspicious behaviors, deter theft and escalations, and interact with community members in service-related manners.
• Recover merchandise from potential shoplifters in safe, service-oriented manners.
• Collaborate and assist loss prevention personnel, store management, employees, and law enforcement officials to report and resolve theft and escalated incidents.
• Implement and maintain loss prevention policies and procedures, adapting strategies to minimize risks.
• Prepare and deliver daily summaries of incidents, interactions, merchandise recoveries, and other safety-related activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge:
• Understand retail or grocery store operations, including sales and customer service skills.
• Familiarity with local, state, and federal laws regarding theft, fraud, and retail security.
• Ability and willingness to receive ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
Skills:
• Detect suspicious activities and identify potential security risks.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Possess good decision-making abilities.
• Skills in de-escalating potentially volatile situations calmly and effectively. Capable of mediating conflicts and resolving issues.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to interact diplomatically with suspects, customers, and employees and write reports.
Abilities:
• Ability to make sound decisions quickly, under pressure, and in ambiguous situations.
• Strong integrity and ethics, with the ability to handle confidential information appropriately and make decisions that reflect the company's values.
• Ability to adapt to changing situations, handle multiple incidents simultaneously, and operate effectively in a dynamic retail environment.
Physical Requirements:
• Must be able to move around the store and have stamina to stand for long periods, including walking, climbing stairs, and navigating crowded spaces.
• Ability to occasionally lift or move objects weighing up to 50 lbs., including assisting loss prevention personnel in preventing theft, recovering merchandise from potential shoplifters, and respond to emergencies.
• Must possess solid visual acuity to observe suspicious activities. Auditory acuity is required to detect sounds indicative of theft or other emergencies.
• Sufficient manual dexterity to operate security equipment and perform tasks such as writing reports.
• Must have the physical stamina to patrol the store premises.
• Ability to bend, stoop, and reach as necessary during daily routines, and when interacting with community members or conducting physical security checks.
Work Conditions:
• Work Hours: Vary, with availability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed.
• Environment: While primarily indoors, climate-controlled, with adequate lighting and ventilation, duties may occasionally require outdoor work in all weather conditions to monitor external incidents, assess security risks, and conduct exterior property checks.
