About the role

Company Description

We believe the economy is better when everyone has access. When everyone has room to grow. No one should be left out because the cost is too great or the technology too complex. We started with a little white credit card reader but haven’t stopped there. We’re empowering the independent electrician to send invoices, helping the ice cream shop pay its employees, and giving the burgeoning coffee chain capital for a second, third, and fourth location. We’re here to help sellers of all sizes start, run, and grow their business—and helping them grow their business is good business for everyone.

Job Description

It’s essential that we verify our seller’s identities and that we keep up to date with them as their businesses change and grow. Customers rely on our team to keep track of the sensitive details of their business, to manage who can make changes, and to make it painless to stay within the bounds of the law regardless of how their business evolves.

We are looking for a Software Engineer to join our Trusted Identity group within the Identity Experience team. We own building a platform and set of experiences that allow our Sellers businesses – and Square’s understanding of them – to evolve over time throughout Square products.

You will:

  • Build the services used drive identity information management for Square sellers all over the globe
  • Work with other engineers across Square and Trusted Identity to develop excellent product experiences
  • Collaborate with product, design, and other teams to make changes in Seller profile management
  • Hold yourself, and your teammates accountable to the standards of engineering that enables Square to safely move billions of dollars in payments and allow our customers to trust us with their sensitive data
  • Aim to make yourself and your team better through continuous improvement and growth

Qualifications

You have:

  • BS Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience; candidates in this role typically have 5+ years of industry experience
  • Programming depth with one or more of Ruby, Java, Go, or JavaScript (Ember/React)
  • Great communication skills and an ability to work cross-functionally
  • An openness to collaboration and willingness to grow as an engineer
  • A sense of customer empathy and desire to influence the product direction
  • Understanding and curiosity in creating well thought out, scalable, low-latency, global systems

Above and beyond:

  • Experience contributing to medium- to large-scale feature releases
  • Knowledge of payments or FinTech space

Technologies we use and teach:

  • Java, Ruby (Rails), Go
  • Ember, React
  • MySQL, NoSQL, Redis, Kafka
  • AWS, GCP
  • Protocol Buffers, Bazel, Terraform, Kubernetes, Envoy
