Job Summary

Assists one or more Assistant City Attorneys with the details of all aspects of legal work, carrying out legal dutiessuch as researching legal issues; preparation of documents pertaining to the handling of cases; collection ofdocumentary evidence and information; securing copies of regulations, statutes and case reports; and the screeningand processing of correspondence. This position reports to and performance is evaluated by an Assistant CityAttorney.

Paralegal

Dallas City Attorney’s Office – General Counsel Division

The Dallas City Attorney’s Office is seeking an energetic, self-motivated paralegal with three to five years of experience to fill a full-time position in the General Counsel Division. The successful candidate will assist the General Counsel Division with all aspects of legal work with an emphasis on legal research, drafting contracts and memos, and economic development, housing, and state and federal grant issues.

A successful candidate must be proficient in Westlaw Next and Lexis, Microsoft Office, Salesforce, and Acrobat Professional and have experience using case management software. Candidates must be proficient in drafting legal memoranda, correspondence, and other written documents; and be knowledgeable of legal terminology, principles, and procedures. The successful candidate must also be able to maintain calendars, schedule appointments, meetings, and conferences for attorneys. Other duties may be assigned.

Candidates must have a paralegal certificate or a bachelor’s degree in a related field. The successful candidate must possess excellent personal interaction skills with the ability to work cooperatively with other employees, clients, and members of the public; and be a self-starter, organized, and able to work independently, where necessary, in order to complete a project.

Salary is commensurate with experience.  The city's comprehensive benefits package comes with the position.  This position is exempt from the provisions applicable to civil service, pursuant to Chapter XVI, Section 9 of the Dallas City Charter.  Details concerning the Dallas City Attorney's Office are available at www.dallascityattorney.com.

Overview

The Paralegal assists and supports one or more Assistant City Attorneys with the details of all aspects of legal and related clerical or research work. Prepares documents pertaining to the handling of cases, collects documentary evidence and information, secures copies of regulations, statutes, and case reports, and processes correspondence.

Knowledge and Skills

1 Knowledge of standard office procedures and practices.
2 Knowledge of the principles of civil and criminal law, city ordinances, state and federal laws, established precedents and sources of legal reference.
3 Knowledge of court procedures and rules of evidence.

4 Knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, practices and reference utilized in legal research.

5 Ability to analyze, appraise, and organize facts, evidence and precedents relevant in assigned cases.

6 Knowledge of correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

7 Communicating effectively orally and in writing.

8 Knowledge of customer service and related skills.

9 Ability to use office machines and computer software.

10 Ability to perform under pressure.

11 Ability to prepare routine correspondence and communication.

12 Establishing and maintaining strong and effective relationships.

Experience

3 years experience in municipal law.
