About the role

Job Description

Be a part of the legacy: Postdoctoral Research Fellow Program

Our Research Laboratories’ Postdoctoral Research Fellow Program aims to be a best-in-industry program for industrial postdoctoral researchers, designed to provide you with an academic focus in a commercial environment. With the resources, reach, and expertise of a large pharmaceutical company, postdoctoral researchers will be positioned to excel in an institution committed to breakthrough innovation in research and discovery.

Position Overview

Scientific Question

In vitro assays are a crucial tool to assess the potency of antivirals against respiratory viral infections. However, their ability to predict an antiviral effect clinically has not been well established. The goal of the project is to build viral dynamics models to translate from preclinical data to clinical outcomes. This project will focus on: 1) in vitro viral infection kinetics, 2) in vivo viral dynamics in clinical studies, 3) pharmacokinetics. By demonstrating a clear preclinical-to-clinical translation, the in vitro assay can be validated. The results of these analyses will be used to support the generation of more clinically translatable data at-scale, which will ultimately identify promising therapeutic candidates and maximize the probability of success during drug development.

What is the Position?

As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Quantitative Pharmacology and Pharmacometrics, you will work with a collaborative team of scientists in quantitative pharmacology and quantitative biosciences. You will develop new quantitative models using published and in-house data on the kinetics of respiratory viral infection in vitro and in vivo. These models will then be validated and used for preclinical to clinical translation of antiviral potency against respiratory viral infection. All Postdoctoral Research Fellows work with a dedicated mentor, collaborate with experienced scientists, and are fully integrated into the larger Quantitative Pharmacology and Pharmacometrics group.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Surveying and curating the literature for preclinical and clinical data for antivirals against respiratory virus infection;

  • Synthesizing published data with in-house data on our company's assets to develop analysis datasets;

  • Developing viral dynamics models of different respiratory virus infections based on in vitro and in vivo data;

  • Collaborating with cross-functional colleagues on how these models can be applied to optimize translatability of the in vitro assay to improve selection of clinical candidates;

  • Presenting your research at conferences and/or publish in peer-reviewed journals.

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • Candidates must currently hold a PhD or will you have completed your PhD within the next year.

  • Degree in physics, mathematical biology, mathematics / applied mathematics, computer science, computational biology / chemistry, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, pharmacometrics, chemical / biomedical engineering, systems biology, or a related field.

Required/Desired Experience and Skills:

  • Experience with mathematical modelling of biological systems.

  • Proficiency in at least one programming language or pharmacometrics application (e.g., R, MATLAB, Python, NONMEM, Monolix, or other language);

  • Scientific writing skill, demonstrated by publication record (includes preprints).

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Experience with viral dynamics modelling/mathematical modelling of in vitro or in vivo (e.g., within-host) viral infection data;

  • Understanding of experimental design and interpretation of data from infectious disease assays;

  • Knowledge of respiratory virus biology;

  • Experience with pharmacokinetic modelling (e.g., population PK [popPK] modelling);

  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams that include clinicians and biologists.
