As a Sr. Environmental Control and Life Support (ECLSS) Systems Engineer you will be responsible for;

  • System design from preliminary to detailed design with aspects such as architecture, engineering budgets, structural, thermal, electrical and data handling design, software implementation, chemical and process engineering
  • Preliminary subsystem design for Atmosphere Management System, Water Management System, and Metabolic Waste Management System
  • Implementation of constraints into the design process such as mass, volume or power limitations, and frequently changing baselines via continuous coordination with external and internal stakeholders
  • Definition of interfaces ECLSS-internally in close collaboration to other subsystems like (but not limited to) thermal control system, payloads, crew systems, structure, electrical power system, data handling system, etc.
  • Formulation of operational modes on system and subsystem level for nominal, contingency, and emergency operation
  • Advancement of ECLSS-internal trade-offs and analyses in a highly dynamically changing environment
  • initiation and steering of required simulations and cross-discipline analyses
  • Verification and validation (V&V) approach
  • Assembly, integration, and test (AIT) approach
  • Development of operations concept, logistics, redundancy, and spare approach
  • Gathering, understanding and implementing detailed design information from suppliers on specific H/W and technologies into the overall ECLSS design (handling of export control, corporate proprietary, and ITAR-related data)
  • Assessment of technological solutions from the assembly (e.g. oxygen generation, trace contaminant control, urine processing, temperature and humidity control) to system level e.g. regarding development time, cost, technical readiness, and interactions of the complete system

Qualifications;

  • Equivalency of Bachelor's degree (required) or Master's degree (preferred) in an applicable STEM field.
  • Minimum of 9 years total engineering experience (w/ Bachelors); minimum of 7 years total (w/ Masters); Equivalency of five years specific experience with spacecraft ECLSS system conceptualization, design, development, integration, and testing to include (atmosphere, water, sanitation, temperature, humidity, fire suppression).
  • Familiarity with existing ECLSS-related documentation (Gateway, ISS, Columbus, ICES Papers etc.)
  • Knowledge of manned spaceflight project phasing and development approach and related project reviews from SRR to FAR and documentation.
  • Knowledge of environment control and life support technologies in the fields of atmosphere management, water management, and metabolic waste management
  • Experience with developing and qualifying specific ECLSS equipment over the complete life cycle
