Job Description

Under limited supervision, this position is responsible to coordinate incoming communications and other activities to support Security personnel and other members of the University in the interest of safety.

This position receives emergency and non-emergency calls for service requiring the incumbent to have the ability to remain calm in an atmosphere of changing priorities and periods of high stress.  This position dispatches, monitors, and responds to security personnel and other university personnel (Facilities, Finance and Administration, Residential Life, Athletics, and other departments), operates computer aided dispatch and records management system, operates the State Allied Radio Matrix for Emergency Response (ARMER) radio system, operates emergency paging software, trains new personnel, operates internal security systems and alarms (telephone, communications and life safety alarms, devices and systems), monitors and operates university surveillance systems, electronic security, and provides direction to all Communications Unit student employees, provides primary technical lead-worker direction to Student Paraprofessional Communications Officers; conducts on-the-job training to student and paraprofessional employees; assists with the classroom training of same.

This position has been designated as weather and emergency essential. In the event of a University closure or emergency event, incumbent is required to report to work and respond as requested. Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of clerical service, client service, or customer services experience.

  • A high school diploma, basic computer skills, and clear criminal background.

  • The ability to work Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm including weekday holidays with the occasional flexibility to work nights and weekends as determined by the appointing authority and guidelines set forth between the State of Minnesota and the representing Union.

  • Ability to sit for 8 hours and/or stand for 8 hours; use hands for grasping and fine manipulating.

  • Fluent communications skills in the English language which include listening, speaking and written.

  • Ability to listen and speak on a standard telephone and two-way radio using a clear loud voice. 

  • Ability to clearly distinguish colors correctly and provide accurate physical descriptions.

  • Have normal or corrected to normal hearing and have eyesight 20/20 or corrected to 20/20 with normal color vision.

  • Class D Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualification 

  • Two years of dispatching or security experience.

  • Computer literacy to include a working knowledge of PC computer devices and associated software to include Microsoft Office Products. Ability to type 45 words per minute.

  • Knowledge of standard security law enforcement communication practices, and basic principles of two-way radio communications.

  • Knowledge of ICS (Incident Command System) and NIMS (National Incident Management System)
