About the Department
Our Resident Education and Development (RED) team is responsible for providing leadership in the development of a positive community within the residence communities. Our goal is to be a partner in students' educational journey through an intentional, educational and vibrant residential experience!
Job Overview
The Assistant Director of Academic Initiatives provides leadership, oversight, and administration of the residential experience through Living-Learning Communities, the residential curriculum, and student staff academic support/recognition. Additionally, the Assistant Director oversees the student learning assessment of the overall residential experience.
The AD in this role will also serve as a liaison to campus and academic partners. This position reports to the Associate Director for Resident Education and Development.
Essential Functions
- Provide direct supervision (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.) to non-exempt and exempt departmental staff (including, but not limited to, Area Coordinators, and Human Resource Coordinator); provides indirect supervision to Community Coordinators, Graduate Assistant, and Resident Advisors for an assigned residential area.
- Lead the development, planning, and implementation of the Living-Learning Communities program and residential curriculum alongside the Academic Initiatives Coordinator.
- Foster faculty relationships and involvement with living learning communities.
- Partner closely with housing services to guide and administer our gender inclusive housing program.
- Develop assessment processes for student learning through the residential experience.
- Work collaboratively with the Division of Student Affairs, academic colleges, and campus partners.
- Assist in the coordination of marketing information and staffing for all large-scale Admissions events such as Open Houses and Bearcat Brunches.
- Develop and facilitate training on university policy, procedures and guidelines.
- Participate in processes enacted to set polices and/or develop procedures.
- Compile resources and materials for Resident Education and Development.
- Assist in the creation and completion of the annual goals of the Resident Education and Development team.
- Support the departmental residential curriculum including the review, and use of assessment data for recruitment and hiring processes.
- Serve on department committees.

- Serve in after-hours emergency contact with members of the RED Leadership Team.
Required Education
Bachelor’s Degree must be in College Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration or related field.
Required Experience
- Five (5) years of experience in Student Personnel, Counseling, higher education or residence hall administration or a related field.
- Previous supervisory experience.
Additional Qualifications Considered
- Masters degree in higher education, leadership, counseling, or related area plus five (5) years of professional experience.
- Previous experience with managing recruitment processes.
- Experience working in housing/residence education.
- Previous experience working with faculty/living learning communities.

- Office environment/no specific unusual physical or environmental demands.
Compensation and Benefits
