Position Overview:

Performs routine and specialized non-invasive neurological tests as ordered by the physician for the diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and prevention of injury or disease. Works independently, exercising sound judgment, and developed clinical skills to execute safe and precise procedures to deliver accurate results to physician in a timely manner. Gains confidence and cooperation from the patient, their family/support group, and other healthcare providers through patient assessment, attentive monitoring and care, and effective communication. Adheres to all local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies, and procedures to ensure privacy and safety while delivering optimal patient care.

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

NEURODIAGNOSTIC SERVICES:

• May perform electroencephalograms (EEGs) and other non-invasive neurological testing according to policy and procedure and verifies test results, making corrections, and reporting them to the ordering physician as necessary. May perform nerve conduction studies independently in routine settings under direct supervision of electromyography (EMG) physicians. For EMG procedures, communicates the test results with the overseeing EMG neurologist and performs additional studies as needed.

• Educates the patient on the test or procedure in a clear and professional manner to alleviate fear and anxiety.

• Operates and troubleshoots diverse equipment necessary for job performance.

• Ensures that routine and priority tasks are completed within established departmental time frames.

• Mentors and fosters a constructive environment that helps students and new cardiac professionals build confidence in their skills, knowledge, and abilities.

CLERICAL:

• Performs general clerical tasks, such as answering phones; updating patient appointments; or retrieving, entering, and revising patient electronic health records (EHR).

• Prepares and completes accurate documentation related to patient, including all assessments performed in medical and departmental records.

SAFETY:

• Maintains a clean, neat, and safe working environment, including cleaning and disinfecting equipment after each procedure.

• Inspects and calibrates equipment accordingly for proper operation and records the quality control (QC) results, reporting any malfunctions to the supervisor.

COMPLIANCE:

• Maintains strictest confidence of all patients’ protected health information (PHI) and protects all PHI from accidental, intentional, or inappropriate disclosure.

• Performs quality care in compliance with department standards, policies, and procedures, as well as local, state, and federal regulatory agencies to deliver the highest level of patient privacy and care.

EDUCATION:

HS Diploma: HS Diploma or GED


CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE:

REEGT-Registered Electroencephalographic/Neurodiagnostic Technologist if performing EEGs

EMG-Certified Electromyographic Technologist if performing EMG procedures

BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider


TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:
1-year recent relevant experience.


SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

In-depth knowledge of neurodiagnostic services, mechanics, and equipment. Basic functional neuroanatomy and neurophysiology relevant to EEG and/or EMG

Ability to interpret a variety of data and instructions, furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Knowledge of electrographic correlates of clinical conditions such as generalized tonic-clonic seizures, complex partial seizures, and nonepileptic events.

Knowledge of medical terminology and accepted abbreviations in neurodiagnostics, basic electricity and electronic concepts of EEG and/or EMG equipment, as well as anatomical correlation of EEG waveforms.

Capable of evaluating EEG and/or EMG test results as well as a basic understanding of human anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and medical terminology.
