The Laboratory Technician will be a member of Convatec’s newly-founded materials center of excellence based in the new Convatec Technology Center in the greater Boston area. They will report to a Senior Scientist in the Advanced Biomaterials group, with a specific focus on Convatec’s adhesives technologies.
This individual will conduct hands-on laboratory experimentation with materials characterization equipment including but not limited to tensile testers (e.g. Zwick), thermal analyzers (e.g. TGA, DSC), microscopes (e.g. SEM, optical), chemical analysis tools (e.g. FTIR), and surface analysis (e.g. Particle size and DSA). This individual will also be trained on, and perform industry-specific adhesives testing. In addition to operating the equipment, the candidate will support laboratory growth and development through tasks such as SOP writing, data organization, equipment troubleshooting, and new method development.


The candidate will work closely with Engineers and Scientists to identify key needs across active projects in Convatec’s business units. Then, this individual will independently operate laboratory equipment, propose feasible experimental work plans, and summarize resulting data to support the needed project goals. They will be an integral part of data-driven decision-making for the Advanced Biomaterials Team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct laboratory research safely and rigorously.
  • Install, operate, and troubleshoot equipment when needed.
  • Help develop new laboratory capabilities and test methods necessary for experimentation and materials characterization.
  • Assess safety hazards of all new test methods and equipment. Work with our Facilities and EH&S manager to ensure proper PPE and procedures are in place for operation.
  • Write Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs) for all new test methods developed.
  • Work with Scientists and Engineers to establish feasible experimental work plans for various projects
  • Summarize and communicate results as needed

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Software proficiencies in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint are required
  • 1+ years of hands-on experience in a materials and/or chemistry laboratory
  • Experience in materials characterization techniques (TGA, DSC, FTIR, rheology, SEM, particle sizing, DSA, mechanical testing etc.) is a plus
  • Working knowledge of statistics is a plus
  • Experience in adhesives is a plus
