About the role

Who We AreSince its founding in 2010, Challenge Preparatory Charter School (Challenge Prep) has provided students and families with a successful academic program in Far Rockaway, Queens. We currently serve over 1200 scholars from Kindergarten to 12th grade across 3 sites. Our school’s mission is to prepare students from the greater Far Rockaway community to excel academically, to demonstrate mastery of the NY State Learning Standards, and to achieve their career aspirations. Challenge cultivates and supports the intellectual, aesthetic, social, emotional, and ethical development of its students and prepares them to be responsible 21st century citizens. To accomplish its mission, Challenge offers a rigorous instructional program in a safe, supportive, technology-infused and data-enriched and social-emotional learning sequence, authentic field experiences, career counseling, and college coursework.  It is understood that we are one organization with multiple sites, and it is expected that all members of the team collaborate to support all of our scholars.
 
Understanding the Role The instructional coach (IC) is a learner who models continuous improvement, lifelong learning, and  goes above and beyond to ensure student success. The role of the coach is to build teacher capacity by providing individual and group professional learning opportunities that will expand and refine the  understanding of research-based effective instruction in response to student and teacher data. The  instructional coach works collaboratively with members of the elementary leadership team to support  student achievement through teacher development. The Instructional Coach will promote reflection,  provide guidance and structure where needed, and focus on strengths, collaboration, and common issues  of concern. They are responsible for ensuring high-quality instruction in classrooms through modeling,  co-planning, co-teaching, and providing feedback to teachers. The instructional coach will demonstrate  and model a passion for urban education reform and leadership. This is a non-supervisory position that  does not evaluate teachers but does provide documented feedback. This position reports to the principal.

Overall Job Goals and Responsibilities

  • Leadership and Coaching:  
  • Serve as a member of the instructional team by preparing for and participating meaningful in meetings, tasks, and collaborating with all members of the ILT 
  • Build strong relationships with teachers and teacher assistants 
  • Support teachers with understanding and demonstrating commitment to the CPCS vision and mission 
  • Collaborate with the leadership team to ensure the validity and reliability of student data by  attending to the rigor and alignment of assessments  
  • Orient and support new teachers  
  • Provide support and training to teacher assistants 
  • Provide a wide variety of learning opportunities for teachers focused on analyzing student work, effective planning, targeted and differentiated instruction, and setting high expectations for classroom culture and behavior 
  • Coach, manage, and develop a caseload of teachers to achieve exceptional student achievement by modeling and/or co-teaching regularly  
  • Develop coaching plans (informed by Adult Learning Theory) for teachers and motivate them to  improve their professional practice to ensure student improvement 
  •  Support teachers in using data to improve instruction, especially for underperforming scholars
  • Observe teachers weekly to gather and share data on student learning and teacher proficiency, to  diagnose teachers’ strengths and weaknesses, and determine strategies for improving their  practice and improving student learning; document findings in TeachBoost 
  • Assist teachers with planning and pacing of lessons, the development of differentiated lessons,  and the selection of best practices to meet the needs of their students as evidenced by reliable  data
  • Support teachers by helping with the ―strategic how of teaching -- share multiple instructional  strategies/processes with teachers during planning times  
  • Develop coaching plans for teachers to ensure student improvement  
  • Support the development of Individual Achievement Plans (IAP) 
  • Contribute to the development of the career education curriculum  
  • Create and maintain a strategic schedule as evidenced by a weekly coaching log 
  • Assist teachers with resources, materials, tools, information, etc. in supporting classroom  instruction and planning, including new resources  
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Principal
